BOY WHAT A TEAM! When Chico and Rita come out in this movie –it’s like a super Nova has taken over the nightclub. Maybe it’s that “krill”oil I’ve been urging them to take. Naa – I’m just joking.

BE CAREFUL THOUGH--this unusual animation is so sexy, thatyou may have to re-adjust your trousers. Some scenes are in the nude. Notoffensive – but nude. I think you know what I mean.

I sure hopeChico and Rita get that Oscar for best animation. Everyone looks so real – sohuman. It looks almost like 3-D. The eyes are totally amazing for an animatedmovie. It’s a visual feast that I won’t ever forget -- and you won’teither.

Bebo Valdes supplies the Latin music along with others likeTito Puente. Together they keep you in a sensual mood. I say: “Give us moremovies like this!” It definitely is from the heart. Did I say it’s beautiful?Well, if I didn’t, take my word for it. The movie is over the top gorgeous.

Oscar winning director Fernando Trueba is beyond masterful – hehas put together a rainbow of Las Vegas, Hollywood and New York. The thrill ofdiscovering the deep affecting music is really high level. Not once did I nodoff. Oh no – not at all. NEVER in this enthralling and clever beautiful rainbowdo you get bored.

Oh, by the way – the Soundtrack is really a must have. It’snow available on Calle 54 records (Sony Music – US/Latin).

Martin Scorsese has done it again. His movie Hugo is an epicmotion picture beyond belief. In this charming, visual masterpiece, we follow a youngman who is fascinated by mechanical wonders. The boy’s father teaches his sonhow to make moving things from clocks to a mechanical man.

A terrible accident kills his father. The boy is left withhis drunken Uncle who takes care of running all the clocks at a enormousParisian train station. The boy has nowhere to stay – so he hides out in theinner depths of the fascinating building. He has to eat, so he grabs what hecan from the vendors in the cavernous lobby. He keeps the clocks moving – andno one even knows that the Uncle is dead. Hugo is one of the most ravishing,exciting film stories that you will experience in the moment. It’s abreathless thriller that is based on the novel “The invention of Hugo Cabret”by Brian Selznick.

THE HYPNOTIC CAST: Ben Kingsley (George Mêlées) – JudeLaw (Hugo’s Father) and Sacha Baron Cohen (station inspector) - Asa Butterfield and Chloe Grace Mortez.

The sound and visual aspects on this magnetic show will keepyou on the edge of your seat. I was so wrapped up in “Hugo” that I thought theentire film, was just for me.

It’s now showing at Theaters everywhere in High Definitionand 3-D. I would just skip the 3-D version – it’s not necessary.

ARCHITECTS ARE DEDICATED TO OUTDO FELLOW ‘TECTS’.

The Chase is on. Two talented Architects are having a loveaffair. But love has nothing to do with telling each other that they have aproject going on in Israel. They are shocked to find out that they arecompeting with each other over a memorial. Plus there is another problem. Ayoung Jewish man falls in love with the ambitious female Architect. The YoungIsraeli boy inspires her to design a beautiful Memorial to his father. He tellsher what he would like for his father’s memorial. She gets a little to cozywith the Boy.

Perloff’s writing is absolutely fascinating. Everythingworks perfectly – the sets make the mood. The love story sizzles and the youngIsraeli’s heart is broken.

The play keeps you guessing. It’s mysterious, beautiful andelegant. And -- “Higher” takes off by delivering enticing destinationsworldwide.

BODY AWARENESS -EXHILARATING EXPERIENCE

The play involves four characters. They all have theirissues. But, a funny thing happens on the way to the dining room table, theydisagree with each other most of the time, but somehow they seem to bond.

It’s a crazy and nutty dysfunctional household that getsmore humorous as the clock goes by. The boy, Jared is suspected of havingAsperger’s syndrome. It has something to do with lack of empathy. His startlingblow-ups don’t last long.

The entire family of three tries to confront these issues,but runs into roadblocks. They arealso joined by a photographer who is in town for a “Body Awareness program” ata local college. His contribution is that he takes photos of nude women. Thiskind of shocks the presenter, who is one of the household members. She justwasn’t prepared for this. The photo guy certainly has a certain swarmy charmabout him. He talks his hosts into lighting ‘shabbos’ candles at the dinnertable. One of the women, Phyllis thinks that Frank is using his art forperverted purposes. Frank shockingly says: “What if Michelangelo masturbated tothe statue of David? Does that make him a bad sculptor?” I’ll let you answerthat.

There is lots of sex talk in this play. The disturbed youngman talks about masturbation. He showed his penis to a girl in school. The boythought that the penis bit would get him a date. Wrong!

There is asurprising lot of salty language. And what is really amazing, is that at theperformance that I attended most of the audience were seniors. Of course, itwas a Sunday Matinee. Who would guess that they would have that much fun? Butthey did – and laughed all the way thru the play.

The actors are “Flat out magnificent.” They are: HowardSwain (photographer famous for his nude portraits of women). Swain can charmbirds off the trees. He sure has magic stage presence. Jeri Lynn Cohen and AmyResnick as a Lesbian couple bring “sizzle” to the stage. Patrick Russell (theson) is the kid (21) who shouts out obscenities – “wickedly funny!” This is agood one! Totally “Extraordinary performances."

JESUS IN INDIA - DID HE REALLY SMOKE POT?

O.K. here’s the deal. Jesus is a young man in this play. Hetravels to India and rides around on a Camel. This Jesus is really handsome andhe is also talented. Jesus can play many instruments dude. Yes, Jesus is now inthe new age!

It’s hard to tell what thisJesus is up to, other than having a great time picking up girls. Oh yes, Jesusdoes have sex. So, I guess it’s safe to say – that this Jesus has found new ways tosave souls. The religion is in the rock music. But, of course you have to bestoned to really get into it.

There are drifts of the OldTestament - but this time the words are supported by a rock band. And what would Jesus be without his groupies. He still has them.This is a fascinating new look at religion and Jesus. I’m not quite sure whatit is all about, except for the sex. That I understand. On one hand they looklike a bunch of Occupiers on bikes. And of course, young people have learned thatevery other word has to have some dirty words. Shocking? Well, not to me. I’mused to it. But I wouldn’t bring a Nun to see the play.

I will say that the writingby the playwright is highly intriguing. Insane maybe – but that’s what makesthis peek at this different Jesus very interesting. Especially when he takes histee shirt off.

It is a comedy for grown ups– it’s strange. What is this world coming to? Well I’ll answer that – it willmost likely sell out every evening. Jesus leaves this impression on us: - “Girl,we’ve got a camel – we’re good looking!” – and they ride the hump off into thedesert. And I might ad: "Dude - you're going to Hollywood!"

THE DREAM CAST: DamonDaunno-Jesus. (Powerful acting) – Jessica Lynn Carroll (Passionate). BobakBakhtian (Gopal) is remarkable. Mahira Kakar (Mary) is brilliant. And JomarTagatac (Sushil) – Is Terrific!

THIS PLAY IS PLENTY FULL OF LIFE. It’s about a suave man whohas a few bucks. He also has squeezed fives times as much fun in his life thana greedy banker. Yes, he is sexy and he knows it. We’re talking about Brianhere. Brian (Max) is also a sharp talking suave Casanova. And you know what? –you’re gonna be attracted to him!

Then there is the spoiled-rotten Suzanna, who leans on Max(her adopted brother and money manager). Suzanna as always, leans on Maxand cries until she gets her way. And her way was to suduce Max into her bed.Well, he is adopted – so it’s not exactly like having sex with a bloodrelative.

Max talks a lot: Here is one of his smart Alecquips -- "Prostitution, marriage…Same thing” – Max blurts out. And this isprobably right…Max sez: “It’s two people coming together because each hassomething the other wants.” Now let that sink in. You know it’s true.

Suzanna has now married. Her husband, Andrew Porter fixesMax up with a date. Max realizes that Becky is a desperate person. She’s ahanger on. Determined to get rid of creepy Becky – Max dismisses her. He tellsher in a coffee shop, that he doesn’t want to see her again. Gee – Max realized fastthat Becky is a stalker. She seems to have him trapped.

This play is all about money, class and sex. And ‘hooking’up is mild in this story. How will Max get out of this fix? Well, you’ll justhave to find out near the juicy ending, won’t you?

In the first act Suzanna talks incessantly about her deadfather. The opening scene seemed to go on so much about Suzanna – I began tothink that we were trapped on a space ship to Mars.

Max’s wit carries this play along as he tries to keep up with Suzanna's vulnerablepersona. It’s like she has a breakdown every 15-seconds. Is it because Max andSuzanna are constantly on the verge of an incestuous relationship. Justwatching them together panting over each other is enough to set a hotel room onfire.

But here’s the deal. This is a brisk and entertaining darkcomedy. Everyone in the play is on the edge of a cliff. You never know who isgoing to fall off next. Anyone care to Lap Dance?

CAROL CHANNING: LARGER THAN LIFE DOCUMENTARY

Last year, when I met Channng for an interview she told me astory about how Jackie Kennedy and her children met the “Hello Dolly” starbackstage. Were you surprised – I asked? – “Surprised? That’s not the word forit – I almost fell over. It was a complete secret, and one that I will alwaysremember.” And for sure - that’s right – she forgets nothing.

Channing is amazing. She remembers

everything about Show Business -- right down to who thedirector was in past shows. In the documentary opening at Landmark Theatresthis week we get see her is blazing color on the big screen. She’s stillglamorous and still dancing around the stage with the help of the dancers inthe cast.

In spite of the recent death of her husband Harry, she stillhas the spunk to keep entertaining. In the Documentary we get to see Channingin all her glory in bright brilliant color. What a joy to see her with all herfriends.

Her story begins when she is a child in San Franciso – shefell in love with Harry in High School -- but a change of schools broke it up.Many, Many years later the lovebirds got back together (70 years later). Whenthey started filming the Channing Documentary she was 90 years old. NowChanning at 91 is still performing. Broadway was, and still is her greatestlove along with Harry. In the film, she takes a walk down Broadway and ran intoa few members of the chorus from the Broadway Musical “Memphis.” Fansrecognized her and everyone wanted to touch her.

Sure, Channing had a few films in Hollywood – but eventhough she was one of the biggest names on the map, Hollywood just didn’t fitfor her. Yep, she was definitely a Broadway Babe. After all she starred in morethan 5,000 performances of “Hello, Dolly!” – and never ever missed a singleperformance.

At least now, we have her on film to enjoy her big red-lipsand her over the top raspy-voice.

Drag performers love her dearly. Many still dress up like“Dolly” – and wear the outrageous colorful boas. Like the Documentary says –“She is over the Top!” – and we love it.

It’s an extraordinary thrill to see this movie. Channing isLuminous and superb. Clap yourhands for the best Documentary this year.

MINERS GO TO ART SCHOOL

In England, miners founded an amateur art group in 1934. Hadthey ever painted before? No! But, amazingly the art appreciation class, calledthe ‘Ashington Group’ took the miners to new heights. History was made with the paintings of the Miners. They wereskeptical at first. Along comes Robert Lyon, who was a lecturer at ArmstrongCollege in Newcastle upon Tyne. He had been asked to discuss the possibility offorming an art appreciation class with the miners. And so began a long atedious road for men who worked under ground under harsh conditions, now theywere also painting their impressions of working men that they were familiarwith. Basically, these men painted impressions of their own lives. The outcomeis quite fascinating.

The Pitmen Painters get inspired. Their success gives themthe feeling that they can now do more than dig for coal. And it’s a goodfeeling. With their amusingbanter, they learn that to assert themselves with their paintings and thecloseness with each other over the years, gave them the feeling that ‘Now’ theyare someone to be noticed – not just someone who has dirty hands. However,paint does get on their hands also. This play is based on a true story, andthat makes it doubly interesting. This West Coast premiere has some really funnywisecracking social commentary between the miners. The banter between the mengoes through an amazing transition from coal dust to the art world.

There is a gorgeous, glamorous woman, who takes a specialinterest in one of the coal miners. He is a handsome lad and she really is takenby his artwork. However, as the story goes on – she offers him a job to justpaint on canvas at her mansion. He decides not to leave his buddies who he hasknown all his life in the mines. Later he changes his mind – but the rich andgorgeous woman is no longer interested in his paintings. There is a feelingthat she wanted something more from him than just some artwork. She comes downto see his latest work – and she bluntly tells him that it is not as good, andthat she would not be buying anymore of his Art. To me, it’s clear that she hadsome Amore in the back of her head and not just Art. But English society doesnot give up on the miners-cum-artists. The professor encourages the men to puttheir thoughts on canvas. And boy – it is ever revealing.

This is Thrilling Theater. The play by Lee Hall is all thethings it should be: emotional and political! And talk about extraordinaryperformances – this cast is “spellbinding!”

The Towering performers are: James Carpenter, PatrickJanes, Jackson Davis, Nicholas Pelczar, Dan Hiatt, Paul Whitworth, KathrynZdan, and Marcia Pizzo. This fantastic cast is “Unique and unforgettable!”

HUMOR ABUSE - STARRING LORENZO PISONI

THE GAFFES KEEP COMING on purpose at A.C.T. And that’sexactly what Lorenzo Pisoni intends to do as he tumbles and stumbles, and livesto tell us all about his one-man show about growing up as the youngest memberof the historic Pickle Family Circus.

Not only is he tremendously funny, he also is a great daredevil.He climbs a ladder with fishing fins. He takes more pratfalls than anyone canimagine. And Golly – I held my breath when he shows how to fall down fifteen ormore stairs. Don’t try it at home. Even he admits that he has more broken bonesthan anyone else.

Pisoni also is a damned good actor. He was in Equusalongside Daniel Radcliffe on Broadway. At first you might think that he isjust some kind of Clown in a Circus act, but as the show speeds along you seethe talent, the training, the humor and more skills than you can imagine as ajuggler, acrobat, clown and comedian. And he has biggest and brightest smile inthe world. It’s like – Gee, this guy really loves us!

As he grew up it was “Hello, Beddy-Bye – now get out of bedand learn some tricks.” That’s kinda what his Dad infused in Lorenzo when hewas a kid. Yeh, Dad made it rough for him, but Lorenzo stuck with it, and hisDad. Together they were hugely successful and now, on his own – he is amagical, fantastic talent. The stage has no life – until Lorenzo comes out on that stage – then everythingseems to come alive. That’s one of the many reasons that the Audience gave himthree curtain calls.

There is no doubt about it. Lorenzo Pisoni and his fatherwill always be on a stage. While we may not actually see the father, but hisson who is so spellbinding and colorful, seems to bring him on the stage justby talking about his Dad. The level of craft here is something to behold. It’sspellbinding and wickedly funny. Expect the unexpected.

This is one of the most entertaining stage shows of theyear. You’re gonna fall in love with this hysterical and heartwarming evening.It’s non-stop joy.

LITTLE BROTHER – HIGH TECH POLITICAL

FIRST OFF – Let me make this very clear in non-hi tech. TheCustom made Theatre has become the cutting edge Theatre to go to these days.Lately they have brought thrilling and exciting plays to their stage at Goughand Franklin. There latest is “Big Brother” and it is loaded with Teen Swagger.And like most Teens they meet on the streets and create bonds with other teensthat mistrust their family. They wouldn’t understand the high tech world anyway– “The Teens would say.”

The head Teen (Marcus) seems to always be the one who endsup in peril. He takes dangerous and scary chances. This play (based on the CoryDoctorow Book) sizzles. It bubbles over with enthusiasm and danger that leadsMarcus to end up getting “Water Boarded” by some mysterious Homeland SecurityForce. Marcus and his friends clash with the ill-defined government agencies inthe supposed land-of-the-free. The young teen Marcus has the energy of twelveteens. He’s charming – yet he can be a little annoying. He never sits still forvery long. Like a beautiful Butterfly he flits away in a moments notice.

The version of the play (from the book) brings us to a worldof deceit and mistrust, even among friends. Who can you trust? No one! Nomatter what you think about Politics, and other people’s opinions – dangerlurks. There are touches of the book 1984.

Yes, these kidstake chances. One of Marcus’s friends end-up in a secret prison, but thatdoesn’t stop Marcus from using an X-Box to hack into the government’s networkon the Internet.

There is more excitement in this flawless production. Thevisuals are absolutely stunning. It takes perfect timing to pull off all of thehigh tech magic. Heck, these Teens even know how to hack your ‘Clipper’ cardwith a Radio Shack Radio. Just watching all of the various hues on the backwall is plenty of entertainment, but – it is the Actors that pull this playinto another world. These Actors give searing and sizzling performances. The actors give there allin this erotic and pulse beating play. Here they are: Daniel Petzold as Marcusis flat out magnificent! Marissa Keltie as Ange – can change her persona atanytime – she gives the play that emotional spark! Cory Censoprano plays Darryland many other characters. Cory’s acting is both masterful and confident!

JOSH COSTELLO HAS DIRECTED “THIS CRACKING GOOD THRILLER.” Iwanna see it again!”

All in all, this play is hugely ambitious. “Scary good in this case -- isriveting!” Here’s a line for you to remember. “People who date each other splitup.” It’s in the play. Here’s another sentence that will shake you up – “Don’tyou know about Bart in the Tube? They blew it up!” It’s in the play.

GHOST LIGHT PLUS - CHRISTINE EBERSOLE AT THE VENETIAN ROOM

This is a story loosely based on a father and sonrelationship. The father is the well-known and loved Mayor of San Francisco. Asyou might remember – Mayor Moscone was shot by Dan White, who also killedHarvey Milk. It was a numbing time for all of San Francisco and a terrible timefor Moscone’s younger son. The boy is on the edge of insanity as he greaves hisloss. Jon Moscone (as a young boy) seems to dodge around many questions abouthis father.

Jon Moscone wanted this as a tribute to his father. But thestory is more about himself – and his troubled mind. The play within a playtries to unravel some of the mystery – but only succeeds in muddling our brainsas we try to keep up with the neuroticism.

One moment the play is fascinating, and the next it becomesa muddled mess. You could say – too much and too little time. His best friendsays to Jon (the boy) – “I’ve never seen you act like this before.” But, alas –she didn’t seem to stop him from popping pills and guzzling some kind of drink.

This is a memory play, that I am sure is very dear to JonMoscone, but I do think that the play is a tad over bloated. But wait – heavendoes wait, you know. His father appears near the end of the story in a touchingreturn to the son. Was he really there? Was it a boy’s nightmare? Was he aGhost? I’m not sure. I do know that people that they love appear again, beforethey finally leave our presence. This was tears are flowing time.

There is also this: Even though a Mayor was killed – thepopularity in San Francisco’s White palace seemed to swirl more around HarveyMilk, than the Mayor. That’s O.K. – if they want to idolize only one, but itwas Mayor Moscone who opened his door to seniors and gays. This story does givesome insights into that.

I lost count on how many ghosts were on the stage. Theypopped up all over the place – crawling out of a coffin, and even a bed where aboyfriend of Jon’s crawls out of the mattress (It’s a puzzle. Was Jon’s sexyboyfriend real – or was he another Ghost?) It is all too ethereal. We have topresume much. So, it’s your call. You may see some things that I didn’t.Perhaps I need to get it all straightened out at a psychiatrist’s office. Imust get rid of Jon’s dreams.

Here’s the total deal: There are some wonderful moments. Theacting is Top Drawer and some of the best that I have ever seen. But the play is way too long – some nipand tucks would be helpful. Hamlet where are you when we need you? Oh, thereyou are. Teacher Jon, admonishes a student (a friend and former actor sittingnext to me) about Hamlet. NOW that’s a Ghost Story! I really did get theshivers – at last! When did it end? Oh, about 11pm.

HERE ARE THE BRILLIANT ACTORS: Danforth Comins, Ted Deasy,Peter Frechette, Bill Geisslinger, Isaac Kosydar, Peter Macon, Christopher LiamMoore, Tyler James Myers, Saria Ocon and Robin Rodriquez. PUT YOUR HANDSTOGETHER FOR THEM.

CHRISTINE EBERSOLE – BRAVO!

Without a doubt, Ebersole has the most glorious voice onBroadway. She seems to choose her roles carefully, that’s why she is a stellarstar.

Ebersole was a huge hit in “Grey Gardens” – a hauntingmusical with amazing performances. She won a “Tony” – and I couldn’t have beenhappier.

Here’s the deal. Christine has marvelous versatility. Herfine-tuned voice has fabulous clarity and precision that is rare. Talk about anincredible range. I’ll bet if you opened your windows, you could hear her allover the City.

Yep, Christine can change from comic alto to lyric soprano.Now, how many singers can pull that off? But you will notice this: ‘She can bebrassy and sassy and subdued on love songs. She's probably (in my opinion) thebest show around, the clever arrangements goes from clever wink to sassynightclub. And now here is the best part. For one night only (Sunday the 15^th)at the famous Venetian Room at the Top of Nob Hill a song bird of vast fame will sing from -- from the Fairmont Hotel.You're gonna love it!

Part of the evenings glorious moments is the entrance to theGrand and opulent lobby. I like to get there early so I can let the atmospheresink in. There is only one show this evening at 5pm. I think the show is soldout – but give it a try. Maybe they might be able to squeeze a couple oftickets out for you.

THE TWO-CHARACTER PLAY

WILLIAMS’s play is loosely based on Williams’ sister Rose,and the actor as the brother in this play is based on Williams himself.

It took the famous playwright over ten years to write “TheTwo-Character Play”. Years ago in the mid-eighties, I first saw the play at thenow defunct One-Act Theatre on Mason. It now houses a nightclub of sorts. Whata shame.

Tennessee came to town especially to overlook the play inSan Francisco. We had lunch together at the Donetello Hotel nearby the Theatre.It was a pleasant experience as he told me about a new play that he wasworking on for A.C.T. That play just never made it very far. But, I will saythat his “Two Character Play” is totally mesmerizing.

The Actors at the One-Act Theatre in SF did a fantastic jobin The Two Character. I gave it a “Four Glasses of Champagne” then. Alas – theWilliams play never did really take off the ground as much as he would haveliked. Now, it has resurfaced at the Eureka Theater. And you know what? TheActors at this Revival (rarely performed) is all of this: – Charming, funny,irresistible, hypnotic, poignant and sad. The two characters Felice and Clare(brother and sister) crackle with magnetic force. You can’t get any better thanthis.

The play is a little confusing at times due to the doubleplot in the play within a play. Both of the characters are on the edge ofinsanity. What is reality and what is acting? The actors dip in and out ofperformance. It is sometimes hard to differentiate the actors from thecharacters and reality. But that is what is so exciting and intriguing aboutthe play. Tennessee told me that he originally named the play “Out Cry” – butchanged it later to “The Two-Character play.” Oh, and there is this: Incestbetween the brother and sister. Those Boots were definitely rocking.

Like a magician – this play is an illusion within anillusion. The panic and tension keeps you squirming in your seat. I would saythat “Character” under the guidance of John Fisher, is a giant achievement.

Here’s an excerpt from the script: “ Clare: No pressreception? Artists’ Management? Magnus personally promised, no opening withoutmaximum press coverage on this fucking junket into the boondocks – Jesus, youknow I’m wonderful with the press…(She laughs hoarsely). You’ll notice rightoff, the insanity going on here.

TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT FOR RUSS LORENSON

LORENSON TRIBUTE TOBOBBY DARIN
ROCKS THROUGH THE MUSICAL CAREER OF BOBBY DARIN

Lorenson highlights many of Darin’s songs with sensitivityand stunning musical arrangements. Every number that he sang in this show is sowell done – that you will swear that Bobby Darin is up on that stage. Lorensenbelts out those great standards like "Mack the Knife (Kurt Weill music/Bertolt Brecht (English Lyrics).

Lorenson gives this show a great treatment of the pop classics. The strongvocals are put right in the spotlight where they belong. Songs "Beyond the Sea." The Band, who I will mention further on down along with Russ gives a show with upbeatgusto that gives this show immense pleasure. Lorenson has that certain force that fewentertainers can impart to their audiences. But this guys got it!

Russ chats a lot with the audience, many of them from other cities and countries. They really warmed up to the singing with the strong Horn Section. Kelly Park worked on the original musical arrangements to keep the show as close to Darin as possible. Of course, we know that Kelly Park is one of the best musicians in town, if not the best. What would San Francisco do without him?

Lorenson went into musical territory that I didn't know that his talents extended into that realm. He said: "If you don't like Country music -- It'll be over before you know it." But, gee gosh -- I not only liked it, I was mesmerized by it. I had to slap myself from thinking that I was in Elvis's World. Will Russ make a move into Elvis's territory with a tribute to him?

There are lots of fun songs in the show like "If I Had My Druthers" - lyrics by Johnny Mercer and music by Richard Whiting. Getting back to the Country for a moment - in 1962 Darin wrote the Country style song (music and lyrics - Darin). The audience loved 'You're The Reason I'm Livin'.

Brendan Getzell (in the band) arranged the gorgeous "Eighteen Yellow Roses" - it is more fantastic than anything else I have ever heard. Then there is the tearjerker (music & lyrics: Darin). Darin wrote "Once Upon A Time" and Russ Lorenson delivered it to us in this magical evening. Here's a lyric: "Once upon a time - this world was sweeter than we knew!" All in all this was an enormously satisfying and astonishing evening of music and Darin History. Russ told very interesting stories about the famous singer that I didn't know about.

This is a huge evening of breathtaking songs with a bonus of non-stop sensational music. It was a magical experience.

Here are the excellent muscians: Kelly Park, piano/musical director - Daniel Fabricant, bass/guitar - Kent Bryson, drums - Brendan Getzell, guitar/vocals - Tony Malfatti, Sax/clarinet/flute - Max Perkoff, Trombone - Rich Armstrong, trumpet. Also -- to take us back to the 60's there are the backup singers: Jennifer Essex, Alyssa Stone and Sheelagh Murphy. With this show you get it all...Singing, a tremendous band and the lead Singer who put the show together -- Russ Lorenson.

WAR HORSE BLAZES A TRAIL

Not since ‘Gone With The Wind has there been a spectacularcinematic movie with exceptional storytelling flair like “War Horse.

Steven Spielberg has said that he wanted War Horse to be awar movie that parents can take their children to. Actually, I mostly agree.However, this powerful tearjerker may be too much for very young kids.

This grand scale film has the best cinematography that Ihave seen in many years. I like everything about it…the Acting, editing, artdirection and the breathtaking emotional scenes.

The stage play and book have already been massive hits. It’sdifficult to get good seats for the stage version in New York. The play will becoming to the Orpheum Theatre soon – my advice, get tickets soon. The War Horsemovie based on the book by Michael Morpurgo is a story about a poor, strugglingfamily and their young son (Jeremy Irvine), who falls in love with a Horse thatis being auctioned off. The love between the boy and the Horse isphenomenal. I would keep a lookout for Irvine, who I believe will become a major Hollywood Star and maybe evenbe nominated for an Oscar this year. Heck, while they are at it – why notnominate the Horse? He deserves an Oscar also. And if the Horse doesn’t want it– I’ll take it.

There are some gory war scenes in the film, but thisexhilarating story will overtake any of the gory stuff. You’ll cry, you’llcheer – and yes – at the end of the film you will stand up and cheer. Even Idid…and you know how hard-hearted and self-centered I am!

Bonus: The John Williams musical score evokes openness ofthe countryside. The musical themes lift us to unexpected feelings from theWilliams music while we look at the enchanting Red Skies in the distance. Theexhilaration is powerful enough to keep you in your seat. Although, thisthrilling ride might require that you fasten your seat belt.

And then there is the unforgettable cinematography by JanuszKaminski. It’s a remarkable, Gorgeous rarity. If nothing else – see the film for his work.

UPTOWN – DOWNTOWN – ALL AROUND THE TOWN

Well – here’s the deal. I know when NOT to see a play,musical or movie when the “Little Man” is jumping out of the chair in whatcould be called the “Masturbating position.” My take – I usually avoid anythingrecommend by the Little Man.

Imiss Elizabeth Taylor. I loved talking to her – she was so down to earth. Liztold me a little secret once about her ex ‘Larry’. She said that she saved‘Larry’s’ Life. – “It was my voice that saved his life” – she said at the Fairmont.Interesting…but is the laying of hands next for Celebs? Just wondering.

Realmovie stars are non-existent these days. Gone are the Hollywood Greats. Whatyou get now is heaving breasts, overly sexual scenes, drugs and cheap tackyromance. Occasionally there will be a really great, humanized movie that comesalong – but not to often. I don’t want to pay just to see anorexic waifsplaying loud boom boxes on the screen.

SHUCKS –even “Greater Tuna” had more class than the trash on the big screen. I’ll neverforget “Vera Camp” in the Tuna Musicals. And who could resist the “SmutSnatchers?

Our own homegrown Theatre Rhinois doing quite well since they moved from 16^th Street. And I amhappy for John Fisher, who is putting on some fabulous shows at various venuesaround town. “Sex Rev” – starring Tom Orr. It was one of the most popularmusicals this season. I hope that it opens again soon. But right now JohnFisher (Rhino) has Lea Delaria coming to S.F. with her hilarious – one-womanshow in her New Year’s Eve Show called -- “The Last ‘Butch’ Standing” -- at theVictoria Theatre – 7 & 9pm Saturday, 2961 16^th Street. Remember– It’s ‘BUTCH’—not “Bitch!” There is also music to be heard. Delaria will sing“The Ballad of “Sweeny Todd” among others.

KIM NALLEY - HANDS DOWN BEST SINGER IN TOWN

KIM NALLEY – A MUSICAL WORK OF GENIUS

Pennies From Heaven, Them Their Eyes and My Man are just afew of the songs that are associated with Jazz Singer Billy Holiday. However, Nalley doesn’t imitate. But she does leave a Ghostly presenceof famous and sometimes troubled singers.

YOU MAY REMEMBER SOME OF THESE SONGS!

“Mon Homme” the popular song known in the U.S. as “My Man”was originally composed by Jacques Charles, Channing Pollack, Albert Wilemetzand Maurice Yvain. The song waspopularized in the English-speaking world in the 1920’s with the 1921 recordingby Ziegfeld Follies singer Fanny Brice. The song was a huge hit for Brice andthe record eventually earned a Grammy Hall of Fame Award for Brice. I don’t know if Nalley will sing “MyMan” or some of the others that I mentioned. But I would be thrilled if she did sing some of them. Buthey, whatever she sings – I will become lost in another world.

Nalley gives us great snapshots of Jazz. It was an excitingtime then, when the popular hits were “God Bless the Child”, “Tain’t No BodiesBusiness”, and “Them Their Eyes”. Whether or not Nalley sings any of thosesongs, we will find out this evening at the Rrazz Room. No matter what she sings – it will bedeeply moving and powerful.

Nally’s easygoing style on the stage is infectious. Youcan’t help but like her, and appreciate her varied talents. Even when she sings songs that BillyHoliday and Ella Fitzgerald made popular way back then – Nalley makes them herown now. Its just amazing – Same Song – yet so different! All in All – KimNalley as always, gives an Electrifying evening from the moment that she startsto sing! Talk about a compelling, heart breaking and amusing evening – then weare talking serious singing here. Don’t even think of missing it at The Rrazz Room at the Nikko Hotel inthe main beautiful lobby. And remember – she is on stage live – so it’s likewatching, breathtaking talent in 3-D!

Here’s an EXTRA BONUS – HOUSTON PERSON WILL SHARE THE STAGEWITH KIM NALLEY.

HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS! The Musical.

BRIGHT AMAZING SETS IS THE FIRST THING THAT PERKSYOU UP IN THIS UPBEAT STAGE MUSICAL

The Grinch as you know, is a scary villain that abuses hisdog. This old grumpy hermit hates the “Who’s” down in the Village. They aresimply just country happy folk that especially enjoy the fun ofChristmas.

Well – that’s about to end. The Grinch has decided that hemust stop this Xmas nonsense. So – he cooks up a scheme to steal the Childrens Xmas presents while they sleep. Even one encounter with the Grinch wouldordinarily scare the tinsel off anyone’s tree, but in this case he puffs and heshouts and threatens – but on the inside the Grinch is beginning to show thathe has a heart. Just like the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz. Actually he evenbegins to like children. I must take some lessons from him. I think childrenare obnoxious little monsters on their own – Yes – I do agree with the Grinch…Childrenshould be seen, but not heard.

To Continue the Dr. Zeus story – The Grinch starts out tosteal every ornament and present that he can find. He even takes the Christmastree and the food. Now, I would never go that far – but it does leave a happy moment tothink about.

Of course, I won’t give away the ending – although here is ahint. It gets all warm and fuzzy near the end – even I melted a little with thedazzling snowflakes. They are really beautiful to look at. Actually the entireset is glorious – and very ingenious.

One really wonderful thing about this Grinch is that you canhear every word of every song clearly. What a blessing that is! Will there be aSequel? Well – what could it be? Maybe a Grinch would steal all the gifts fromseniors only in the Village – that would really bring out some tears andoutrage. Of course -- I would never do that.

To get real here – this Grinch story is charming andheartfelt. It’s not an obnoxious parody of the movie, or the TV Version. Themusic is not particularly fabulous – but there are a few tunes that you willrecognize and love.

My Favorites are the Young and old Dog. I also loved thetalented Grinch. One of the biggest hits is: “You’re a mean one Mr. Grinch.”I’m glad they weren’t singing to me. Although the Grinch did throw something my way.

‘SUNSET BOULEVARD’ AND ‘ASTAR IS BORN

O.K. here’s the deal. At the beginning of the film GeorgeValentin (Jean Dujardin) is at a premiere of his film “A Russian Affair”. Theactor poses for pictures in front of the Theater. There is a girl who isdazzled by Valentin. She accidently drops her purse – bends down to pick it up,but the crowd pushes her into Valentin. The next day her photo ends up on thefront page of newspapers with the question “Who’s That Girl?”

Of course – you can guess what happens next. She is the new“A Star is Born.” She auditions as a dancer – Valentin offers her a role in hisnew film. Studio Boss Al Zimmer (John Goodman) objects. “That Girl becomes abigger star than Valentin. A couple of years later the Studio Boss ends theproduction of the ‘Silent Films’. Valentin says that “Sound is just a fad.” Heproduces a silent film that turns into a disaster. He is basically washed up inthe film industry. This is where “The Star Is Born” part comes in. Valentinsells off everything. He now is desperate and drunk all the time. Miller (thatGirl) insists that Valentin co-star in her next film in a dance routine.

The film in black and white certainly has that Silent eralook on the screen. But here’s the problem. Having a movie about not hearingvoices is O.K. if you have enough sub-titles to let us know what in the hell isgoing on. Here’s another mistake. When they leave the studio – why do they openand close their mouths out on the streets and in cars as if they are still in asilent movie? There is one scene where a cop is talking. Only we don’t hearanything. Care to try lip reading? I don’t. In Sunset Boulevard, Norma Desmondtalked when she was big in movies. When she got home and on the street – shetalked like anyone else would – OUTLOUD! Yes, they had faces in those days –and they also could talked off the screen.

Sorry – but this movie is incomprehensible the way it is.They say that the screenplay took four months to write. Really? – what on earthwas there to write about? I could have done it in a week.

I will say that it is elegantly filmed. But after the firsthalf-hour the film begins to become sluggish. The music is one song that isplayed many times over and over. Yes – it has charming moments and it is loadedwith nostalgia about the good old days – but that’s not enough.

Now some of you may say: “I can’t wait to see it again.”That’s fine with me, if you’re into torture. Then again – the film has appearedon some Critics top ten lists as best film of 2011. On the other hand, somecritics would select the Straw man from the Wizard of Oz as best actor. I’llsave you a few bucks – don’t go.

BRING IT ON! @ ORPHEUM THEATRE –

DIRECT FROM THE GOD’S IS THE HEAVENLY VOICE OF FRANC D’AMBROSIO. Ambrosio is the longest running Phantom on stage. And he has thatspecial knack on how to interpret the lyrics in his special spellbinding way.

The audience was hooked at the Rrazz Room on opening night.He actually made us believe in Christmas music. The audience was hanging onevery note. And no wonder… Ambrosio puts a special spell on these songs. Thatis what makes him a great singer.

There is no doubt about it Franc D’ has one of the most powerfuland passionate voice that I have ever heard. His voice range is absolutelyamazing on everything from “It’s beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas, HollyJolly Christmas – Lyric (“For we need A Little Christmas”). What a fun ride itis with “My Favorite things” and so many other special renditions at Christmastime. Even ‘White Christmas” (“Do you hear those Sleigh Bells in the snow”) –really make you believe that you are out in the white stuff.

His glorious, thrilling voice really gets to you with “Oh,Holly Night.” Franc D’ makes us believe this: “From now on your troubles willbe miles away.” Always the tearjerker – the song “Oh Danny Boy” – as D’Ambrosioexplains – is actually a story about a father and son in Ireland. HeartTugging? – Bring some hankies. The venue will change from show to show.

Franc D’Ambrosio will perform at the Rrazz Room thru Dec.18. A little tree told me that Franc’s partner (Skating Champ Brian Boitano)would be in the audience one night over the weekend. Oh, and by the way – Francalso sings his marvelous version of “The Music of the Night” from the Phantom.Believe me – “It’s SOUL-STIRRING!”

BRING IT ON AT THE ORPHEUM THEATRE

For the most part, the songs in this show are awesome if youthey all sound alike. I’m sure that most will not remember one tune. However,on the flip side of the show – it is catchy and fun and there is the reallyexciting acrobatics in the show. One they toss someone up in the air – theyreally get tossed up high. Yes, it’s scary at times, but they seem to land insomeone’s arms all the time, without dropping them.

This show is combination of “West Side Story” (there are tworival high schools. One high school is ritzy the other down so much). There arealso elements of “Glee, the musical story on T.V.) There is even hints of“Grease”. Some of the lines are hilarious. One girl at the school across thetracks sez to a Cheerleader: “Oh well, I like myself – I always have.” Here’sanother line from the same school: “I’m a Bitch all right – but I’m a bitchthat means good!” Many of the boys are great dancers in the poorer school, butthey seemed to have learned how to put you hand over body parts. Overheardsomeone say that they learned that strange movement in a prison. That’s what Iheard.

Everyone in the cast is delightful. The music is just so-so– but the actors at both schools are really outstanding. There are also hintsof “Hair Spray” – however the language is a lot more “out there”. For instance:“But we are stuck up Bitches.” Here’s another: “Cheerleading is like aspreading virus.” A boy to one of the Cheerleaders sez: When I see a Rainbow –I get a stiffer – just by looking at it!” He said this to a possible date. Iguess she got it.

The audience was mostly young. There are wise abouteverything. The place was crowded on opening night – but I wonder how manyTeens are going to shell out money to see it? It’s a party track that is loadedwith teenybopper songs. Great dance music though. It keeps you moving. Thepreppy Cheerleaders do cheer – but mostly they are flying though the air. Well– actually they are tossed into the air – and the strong well-trained boys,catch them before they hit the stage. It really pumps you up.

THE STARS ARE: Taylor Louderman – Adrienne Warren – JasonGotay – Elle McLemore – Ryann Redmond – Arian DeBose-- Gregory Haney – NeilHaskell – Janet Krupin-- Kate Rockwell and Nicolas Womack. They all did anamazing job. Lots of talent up there on that stage – lucky for us that they did“Bring It On!”

XANADU – A MUSICAL SPECTACULARTRUIMPH!

XANADU IS A LOVE STORY, AROLLER SKATING STORY, AND IT IS FULL OF SURPRISES

What a wonderful dancing,comedy and roller skating trip. Wide-eyed lovers (a Muse and a young man)accidentally fall for each other. She is the quirky and exuberant Joie and heis a naïve sexy young man that is just as ditzy as his newfound love. Theirmission is to try to resurrect an old Theatre to make magic and Art. But, firstthey have to deal with an older cranky landlord that wants to tear the Theatredown. Gee – sounds like San Francisco’s Fox Theatre days. Hello Mr. “C”.

There is no denying theextreme comic energy of this cast as they sing the insanely pleasurable,romping musical score (directed by G. Scott Lacy).

The Set looks likecrumbling Greek columns with genius lighting. And, it certainly is the onlytime that I’ve seen raucous roller-skating rides around Greek treasures. Yes,Xanadu is a recipe for nutso fun!

The Young man (JesusMartinez Jr.) says to his newfound blonde beauty Kira – (Chloe Condon) –“You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” Sez Sonny. “ Yeh, -- You’re probably right.” -- (Kira sez).

One of the actors says toSonny – “Ummm- BIG HANDS, BIG FEET – that’s the story I want to hear!”Confused? – You’ll figure it out. Or if you’re that naïve – then forget aboutit.

Briefly: The story isbased on the 1980 cult film, Xanadu. A beautiful Greek Muse (Clio descends fromMt. Olympus to inspire Sonny who is looking for a space where he can create artand culture. Clio/Kira disguises herself as an Australian roller girl namedKira. But she is forbidden to fall in love with the mortal Sonny. Ooops…toolate – she falls into forbidden love. And I won’t tell you he ending.

Of course, the whole thingis a crazy -- 1980’s enjoyable spoof. And what is it today? An incredible --2011 fabulous spoof on the stage.

Perfect endings are hardto come by but this charming little musical makes it more than perfect.

And for that: ThanksSTEPHANIE TEMPLE for the Great Direction and Choreography.

The Book is written by thetalented writer DOUGLAS CARTER BEANE. He famed for “As Bees in Honey Drown” –among many others and many awards.

STACEY KENT'S MUSIC THRILLS NOB HILL TONIGHT

STACEY KENT HAS A HUGE FANBASE

Stacey Kent will appearthis evening in two shows (12-ll-ll) – one at 5pm (sold out) and one at 7:30 pm. The awardwinning singer is American Born, and is wildly popular in the U.K.

Having won all kinds ofAwards – Kent has sold out concerts around the world. Her sets include amixture of classic standards as well as some really great songs written by herhusband and saxphonist, Jim Tomlinson. She not only sings American songs butalso romance songs sung in French. Hope I get to hear “Never let me go.” Butwhatever her choices are tonight – I will love it.

A lot of her music is inthe Jazz style. But she is not stuck in one place. For Kent it is the mood thatis important – and that is what I like about her so much. She is a completesurprise. She’s as refreshing as a comet off the see the world.

And for her to be on theVenetian room’s gorgeous stage at the Fairmont, makes the evening moreexciting. To have a great evening of music and get to hear it in that famousroom brings back so many memories.I just know that Kent will fill all of my expectations. Another thing aboutKent is that she doesn’t blast. She sings stories that you will be humming onthe way home.

‘The Wild Bride’ is indeed “Wild”

CHRISTMAS CAROL – AN EXTRAORDINARY ACHIEVEMENT

A Christmas Carol never seems to run out of steam. The storyabout Greed and Ghosts from Christmas past still intrigues audiences year afteryear. The Current version keeps the show fresh by making slight changes to thescript. There are even hints of the Occupy group. One young man is holding asign outside of Scrooge’s business that says: “I want a job!”

This year’s show is really a fresh treat. It’s like someonedropped candy canes from the top of the stage. A soufflé that never deflates –“an absolute can’t-miss!”

This year’s version has bumped up the Children’s presence asVegetables to a level of delight that really shows off their talents. You couldsay that they are “Fresh and bright Veggies.”

James Carpenter (Scrooge) is again the master of mean. It’sso much fun to see him go from really nasty to warm and fuzzy. And of coursethere is the ultimate ditz, Sharon Lockwood as Mrs. Dilber. Her part may besmall – but her impact is positively historic. With Carpenter and Lockwoodtogether, you get an impressive acting duo.

Also igniting the stage are Manoel Feliciano (Bob Cratchit),Graham Bennett (Tiny Tim), and Sarah Magen (Belinda Cratchit). Also – there arethe Ghosts: Jack Willis, Ben Kahre and Omoze Idehenre (Xmas Past). There ismore than I can squeeze in – but with the children and all the adults I countedat least forty or more people in and out of the stage.

DIRECTED BY DOMENIQUE LOZANO AND BASED ON THE ORIGINALDIRECTION BY CAREY PERLOFF. What would this play do without them? They havethat marvelous touch. I keep hoping that maybe next time they will turn theplay into a complete Broadway style musical. Well – I can hope can’t I?

Also love the music direction by Robert Rutt. Beaver Bauer’sCostumes still infuse excitement to the evening – and the sound by JakeRodriquez will almost bounce you out of the seat. It’s great! -- As is NancyShertler’s lighting design.

WE HAVE BEEN INVADED BY THE BRITISH

Kneehigh’s Theater Company has brought with them fromCornwall -- the Costumes, scenery, props and the best Actors in the World. Allof this is now on the Roda Stage in Berkeley to turn the stage into amiraculous stunning evening. And I’m not surprised--“Kneehigh” has always beentop-quality – and always will be.

This show is a dynamic team. Everything has to work likeclockwork. One little fumble or mistake can ruin the whole canvas. Theenergetic Actor, musicians and set design bring forth a thrilling atmospherethat you won’t easily forget. This team is beyond magnificent. For me – it waslike watching Acting Gods. They could do nothing wrong. Heck I would have likedto hang around with them after the show. Maybe even travel with them to thenext Theatre. Of course, I kid – but I absolutely will see it again, and againand maybe again!

THE SPELLBINDING ACTORS ARE: Audrey Brisson (The Girl) –Stuart Goodwin (The Father & The Prince) Patrycja Kujawska (The Wild) – EvaMagyar (The Woman) Stuart McLoughlin (The Devil) – Ian Ross (The Musician). HipHip Hooray! – “They all give performances of unrelenting ferocity.” And I willsay even more: The cast and the show is an extraordinary achievement in theTheatre World. It’s a gripping thriller and wicked delight. If you love ‘LiveWire’ acting – you’ll love this show! Here's a fun note: Someone sitting behind me said -- "Goodwin Cheated. He's wearing a Kilt with shorts underneath. That's cheating. I'm disappointed!" Gee -- he sure is observant -- I didn't look that closely.

TALK OF THE TOWN...Musicals --quirky, lavish fun and secret codes

SISTERS’ AND GOLDEN GIRLS

THREE SISTERS -- THE MUSICAL MADE ITS DEBUT IN 1934. Now 42^ndStreet Moon has put on a lavish and complete version of the musical to bring usback those more sedate days. This American Premiere (it has played at 42^ndMoon in the past). But that was more of a reading of the musical and it was notcomplete. This is a bona fide hoop-de-do musical with all kinds of hi jinksgoing on.

There is singing and dancing, people with money and thosethat don’t have that much money. The specialty routines are a highlight of theevening. Soldiers dance and sing and girls just pop in and out with a frillylife that is filled with carefree adventure.

The musical sounds very much like other songs that we haveheard over the years. The show opens with kind of an “Oklahoma” style. Then itsuddenly moves from the Prairie to the inside of sumptuous homes. Some of thetunes in the show became parts of later year musicals. The only song thatreally sticks in my mind is the well known, “I Won’t Dance.”

The musical is a lovely trip to another time. Everything isfrothy. The Costumes cover up most everything – and that is what makes thewomen so charming. There was no need in those days to show cleavage. There waseven one song that reminded me of “Sweeny Todd.”

There ARE the classes. Hi and Low. And in this frothy show –they seem to mix well. You will probably also notice a touch of “My Fair Lady.”

There are at least 14 people on the stage. Not all a once –but this is a huge talented cast. Michael Kern’s smile gets any girl that hewants. Bill Fahrner (George Purvis) is really a great Actor. All the Actorsgave their consistent talents. It was a marvelous evening, and if I had theroom -- I would mention everyone.

Director Greg MacKellan knows how to pull the stringsperfectly. Dave Dubrusky (Musical Director) never fails to bring out the hiddenemotions in music. Scarlett Kellum’s Costume Designs are fantastic.

Sometimes going back to the past – is really a blast.

CALL MY CRAZY – But I became a die-hard Fan of the GoldenGirls way back when they were on TV. The Girls were not only funny, but they also delved into social andcontroversial issues. Yes, they probed the forbidden. Aging, poverty,discrimination, dying, friendship and even homosexuality were all problemsaround the world.

Marc Cherry was in the production crew (he came up with most of the tongue in cheek dialogue). You know him now asthe creator of “Desperate Housewives.” You can still see the T.V show's on somereruns or on old VCR’s – but I have a better idea. Go to the Victoria Theatre on 16^th@Mission to see a live take (withpermission) of the Drag Version of the “Golden Girls.” They have been doingthis show for something like 13-years. This is the first time in a really bigTheatre.

The show is actually called “The Golden Girls: The ChristmasEpisodes 2011. And believe me – this Xmas will be the most fun you’ll have thisyear. In the cast are these amazing actors, that look and act surprisingly likethe T.V. Actors. They are: Laurie Bushman, Manuel Caneri, Pollo Del Mar, CookieDough, Heklina and Matthew Martin…with Special guest D’Arcy Drollinger. You’lljust love these Episodes: During her Christmas visit. Dorothy’s Lesbian friendJean falls for the naïve and dorky Rose. Then there is this – Blanche’s gaybrother Clayton stays over with the girls during the Christmas holiday and‘Surprises’ Blanch with the news that he plans to marry his boyfriend, Diego.You’ll just love this Laugh-out-loud comedy.

These over the top personalities really make the showthat everyone is talking about. It’s uproariously funny.

WONDERFUL! – GO SEE IT! At the Victoria Theatre

THE TEMPERMENTALS -- GAY COMMUNISTS?

TEMPERMENTALS was a Gay named Group, and a code word in 1950’sAmerica. The play is about Harry Hay and a younger Rudi Gernrich, who laterbecame a famous fashion designer. Rudi was Austrian, Jewish and very Gay. Hefled Austria when he was 16. Harry was an American and a Marxist. He wasmarried – but Gay.

The beginning of the play starts off with a lot of talk.Harry tells Rudi about his idea to write a gay rights pamphlet. Rudi thinks itis too dangerous. However, they agree to do it – founded the organization called“The Mattachine Society.” Their secret meetings started out with only fourpeople. However, the word got around and the society attracted hundreds.

The story turns to Dale Jennings, who was arrested forallegedly saying something off color to a police officer. The officer used “entrapment.”The word got out and that only enhanced the publicity for the Society.

That was then. Eventually the Society closed shop. Othersecret meeting places took place with other groups. Everyone still had to bevery careful. Now – young people just sort of ignore the whole thing. Theycould care less about what their gay forefathers had to go through with the harassment.

But History is important to us all. The play itself is alittle difficult to follow. First of all the dual roles that the actors have totake over makes the confusion even more mysterious. Maybe that is what theywanted with the NCTC production.

The set is hardly a set. A few wooden chairs are aroundwhich are used for various things. Office, living space and a hideout.

It’s a demanding play that could have some humor put in it.After all – they were Gay. Where were the cracker jack comments that Gay peopleare famous for?

But the author of this play, written by Jon Marans in 2009-- has won a bunch of awards. Soon that hand, he has brought out a subject that may or may not make much ofdifference in today’s attitude. But, it is interesting to revisit History. Thefight actually is not over. There are still Gay Haters everywhere. Keep that inmind.

Here’s a little back-story. Years ago Bonnie Franklin (T.V.Star and Performer) – was at the once famed Mocombo in SF. I was set up to do apre-performance with Franklin at the Holiday Inn on Van Ness. When I got to theHotel Bonnie Franklin had this little dog that she called “Toto” – you know,like the one from The Wizard of Oz. Cute doggy, but it tried to bite my butt.“Toto” (cut as ever) -- even raised his leg and tried to pee on my leg. Just like in the Wizard of Oz – whereis the bicycle with the basket? Remember the line for OZ? -- "I'm gonna get you and your little Doggie too!" It sure could have come in handy. Toto wouldhave loved the ride. I think. At least I would have.

This 10^th Anniversary Holiday Gala promises to bethe most electrifying and one of the years best.

WHO IN THE HELL WANTS TO SEE TOM ORR IN THE NUDE? THE ANSWERIS: YOU DO!

SEX REV: THE JOSE SARRIA EXPERIENCE

Director John Fisher takes us on a hilarious don’t trip overthe bodies queer-comedy drama. Fisher takes you on a wild ride that is allabout politics -- cops that arrest in the 50’s, and beyond the 60’s. This was a time when Gay Bars gotshut down just for turning toward someone on the Bar Stool next to you.

The Story about Jose is a whip snapper. He was outrageousand brave at the same time. He defied the cops and fought to save the famed“Black Cat”. It was a mini opera house, where you could get a drink and listento Jose sing Aria’s from Aida to Carmen.

Later, after they closed the revered “Black Cat” Jose turnedto politics. He blurted out: “I’m going to run for Supervisor” – and guesswhat? – He almost made it with over 5,000 votes with his citywide campaign.

He blurted out again: “ They won’t stop me!” – I will becomethe first Emperor of San Francisco. I will then have some power.” And waddeyaknow – he did exactly what he said and became San Francisco’s first Emperor.

I knew Jose well and he even put me in one of his shows at aTenderloin Bar called “The Royal Palace”. When we all sang a song, that Iforget – Jose said: “Someone is off key” – is that you Lee? I admitted to beingthe off key guy. “That’s great – that’s what I wanted, someone that sings offkey to get some laughs.” So – I joined the show. We all got faux leatherjackets with “The Royal Palace Singers” stamped on the back of the jackets. Ieven did a mock-up as Jose Singing. He didn’t love it—but he admitted that itwas fun.

You know what – this Fisher musical play is brilliant. Andthe performers? – Arguably the best this year! This multiplex formula mix ofsinging, acting and “Cirque du Soleil” like Gymnastics keep the action going.It’s full of surprises and smoldering passion. And then there is the “Hard –Driving” Tom Orr’s naked appearance. He jumps out on the stage, swinging histool around. If you faint easily – don’t go. Dino Paul Crocetti was born in 1917 and he passed away in1995 in Beverly Hills. Martin was often referred to as the “King of Cool” – andhe will always be in our minds.

This Italian American singer could do it all. Not only couldDino sing – he was an Actor, comedian and a member of the famed ‘Rat Pack’.Martin couldn’t read music – but despite that, he recorded more than 100 albumsin his career with major hits like “That’s Amore”, “Volare” -- and his signaturetune “Everybody Loves Somebody”. Dino won a golden Globe nomination for hisperformance in “Who was that Lady?”

We have those memories and Deana Martin (Dino’s beautifuldaughter) is following in that tradition. She has an astounding musical range.She glides through songs with effortless elegance. Her father, of courseinfluenced Deana. And in this tribute you will probably feel like her Dad is onthe stage with her. But – make no mistake about it. Deana has her own personalstyles, as well.

Deana, like her father -- is not only a great singer – she'san all around performer -- songwriter, actress and entertainer. One of thethings that you will really rally around is the crisp and endearing personalsong styling.

We always knew that her Dad had a sexy come hither voice.And now we know that his daughter Deana also has that easy listening style. Sheknows how to bring out the right emotions at the right time. TENNESSEE WILLIAMS 'PERIOD OF ADJUSTMENT' IS HAUNTING

TENNESSE WILLIAMS ‘PERIOD OF ADJUSTMENT’ – SEXUALCONTRADICTIONS

Ralph and George are buddies from the Korean War. Ralph ismarried to Dorothea and their marriage is beginning to “Shake” – just as thewalls of the ‘sweet’ little house do. You see -- the house is built on anEarthquake fault. How they did it– I don’t know – but the house actually shakes now and then and the cracks inthe wall get larger. Scary stuff.

After so many years together Ralph and Dorothea have justabout had it with the marriage. She has left him and he is left with theChristmas presents around the tree. What Dorothea didn’t know about was thegorgeous sheared Beaver Coat that was waiting for her under the tree. Wouldthat change a women’s mind? You bet it would, and did.

Ralph’s buddy – George just got married to a high-flyingblonde. They have been married to Dorothea for almost 24 hours. Long enough forthe marriage to start falling apart. And it does. Ralph has the shakes from hiswar years. He can’t seem to stop trembling. That annoys Dorothea, a ditzyblonde who wonders how she is going to get out of this mess.

This Tennessee Williams play started out with a much largercast. Bill English, Director -- has pared it down to six characters. It isbilled as a ‘Comedy’ – I would say that it is comedy light. Amusing? Yes it is– but roll out of your seats comedy it’s not. Like the Playwright Williams –this is more of a ‘tragic comedy’ – that delves into personal sexual lives. AHollywood Columnist wanted to know why Williams was always “plunging into thesewers.” I don’t think that this play does that – but back in the 60’s thatmight have shocked some audiences – with the sexual hanky panky – now days,that’s no more than a spoon full of honey. Yum, Yum – I love honey. The play isfull of ‘gems’ like – “The World is a big hospital and I’m nursing it.” Here isanother about sexual attempts: - “It was like kissing a rock pile” – referringto lips that did not want to be kissed. And this one made me laugh: “I quit my Job and my wife quit me!”

Tennessee was a flustered man himself – it’s not wonder thathe wrote entirely crazy plays that brought up anger, frustrating sexuality anddownright meanness. But breaking up a marriage is hard to do – and sometimeseven harder to get it back together.

A SOLDIER’S TALE

A VERSION FROM HELL

The story of the Soldier and the Devil came about in 1918.There have been many versions of this Russian folk tale about a soldier and aDevil and a card game. The Devil wins all the Soldiers money – and by lettingthe Devil win, the Soldier is freed from the Devils power.

At The Aurora Theatre they tried to make it even morebizarre by using a puppet (which has been done before). It was absolutelyludicrous to have a four-foot puppet being manipulated by a gigantic womanstanding behind the soldier with her hands in his innards to move his arms andlegs.

The mixed media performance reminds me of the High SchoolPlays that I had to endure -- starting with “Peter and the Wolf.” Why the DramaTeacher thought that these were great ideas – I’ll never know. Like “TheSoldier’s Tale” they were nothing but an evening of boredom.

The best part of the evening was Stravinsky’s music. I justwish there was more of it. We were promised a mixed media show of Dance, Musicand drama. The dancing was jerky; the music was spare -- and the drama? Well,it was missing. Hard as the cast worked, it only led to a vacuum ofnothingness.

This nightmare of a story about a shell shocked Soldier didone thing…it shell shocked me. And that’s only one of the things that this playdid to me.

If screaming were allowed in the Theatre – I was close toit. Everything seemed to me to be tacky. The sets did not thrill me (they werespare) the puppet was such a bore that I went into shell shock and remained ina catatonic state of confusion for hours after I left the Theatre.

The Aurora Theatre seems to have missed the point with thisone. However, there is a surreal nightmarish tinge to the evening, as themusical performances keep a delicate balance that brings out fierce beauty andintense chilling moments.

THE EFFECT OF GAMMA RAYS -- "HAUNTING!"

BEAUTIFULLY REALIZED ‘GAMMA RAYS’

Beatrice (mother) and her two daughters (Ruth and Tillie) has to deal with a mother who takes everything out on thedaughters. Let’s face it…the whole family is dysfunctional. The Mother drinks alot, and becomes edgy and angry with each drop of booze.

One daughter has epileptic fits…maybe to escape the realityof her life. The other daughter is treated like so much garbage. The mothermakes fun of her and favors the epileptic daughter.

Tillie is the weakest in the family. She is shoved into acloset so to speak. “Gamma Rays” has great, revealing plotting that takes youon a trip to the moon where Tillie hopes to go. The use of lighting andsymbolism are the features that really keep you clued to this story.

Paul Zindel won the 1971 Pulitzer Prize for his play. And he deserves it. Zindel has written many works thatexplore the lives of parents that are crazy and alcoholic. Well, you will beintoxicated with this brutal story.

“Gamma Rays” truly gives great insight into a parent thathas abusive traits. There is not any physical violence – but sometimes ‘mentalbrutality’ is worse.

WAS J. HOOVER A FASCIST?

There are those that say the former G. MAN (GANG BUSTER)used his seat in the FBI to blackmail politicians to get himself in the spotlight. Yes,seems he was that weirdo that we see on the screen.

In a way it was a treat to see this movie. But then, beingolder – I remember those days of “Gang Busters”, Killers and creepy sleazy guyslike tubby Hoover. But the treat almost put me to sleep.

The movie photography is “super” – but kind of falls apartwith all the flashbacks. The scenes jump around too many times to get a clearexplanation of what’s going on. And that blame should go to Director Clint Eastwood. The makeup isanother problem. While Di Caprio aged well on the screen his sidekick ArmieHammer (Hoover’s #2 man) did not age well at all on the screen. The makeup washideous. He looked like he had just left the Frankenstein Castle.

What kind of a person was Hoover? Well, I’ve never met him,but I’m supposing that he was a fat ass bore who thought he was important. Hewas paranoid, a control freak and a complete asshole.

We have all heard the stories about how Hoover liked tocross-dress. In this version on the screen there is only one view of him doingthat. It was when his mother died – he put on her dress in her bedroom and her beadsaround his neck. This could be interpreted a couple of ways. One – he wanted tobe close to his mother. Two – he was a closeted drag queen that was dying towear that dress.

J. Hoover and his sidekick were inseparable. They hadbreakfast every day with each other and they also always had dinner togetherevery day. This was the weirdest love affair that I have ever seen. Maybe theyounger man (Armie Hammer) was just sticking around for the vast Estate and themoney – which he got in the end. Although – the way he looked, he didn’t havemany days left in his life.

At the screening that I attended the audience was at least30 years old and older. I don’t think that Teens would even understand what thehell was going on. Even though the plot was interesting – it would probablywork better on the stage with a proper audience. Actually – I’d love to see itas a musical. Can’t you just see Hoover and his sidekick dancing in the FBIOffice? Let’s put Hoover in a gorgeous 30’s dress, and his boyfriend in hisusual tight ass suit. Yep – the Broadway stage is just dying for this one.Would anyone like to write the score?

Ozard may look different every time - but the voice is always strong

CARLY OZARD – TOPS THE CHARTS WITH A NEW SHOW

CHARM - WIT – CARLY’S GOT IT ALL IN A NEW SHOW

Maybe it’sjust her voice – and then again, maybe it’s orchestrations. Whatever it is,this was one of the most gorgeous, enjoyable and heartbreaking evenings thatI’ve been to in a long, long time.

Yeah – Carly knows how to bring beautiful and touching musicto her shows that show actual details and emotions. There is even sort of aplot about romance and how it sometimes fails.

As usual, Carly has assembled a fantastic Band – led by thetalented, always smiling KELLY PARK. At this show he played the piano -- the manhas fingers spun from Gold. And of course the rest of the boys in the Bandturned in exciting performances.

Ozard reaches out for music pieces that are undeniably heartwrenching. Oh, sure she sings some light and fun songs also – but it is thetearjerker songs that really get to you.

Every singer seeks a repertoire that will help him or herstand out from the crowd – and at the Rrazz room, she brought down the house.

Here are a few songs that Ozard brought to the mike. Therewas her outstanding version of “Carousel”. If that don’t make your socks rollup and down, then nothing will. She said to her audience – “the moral of thesong is don’t piss a crazy person off!” From ‘Miss Liberty’ there was theupbeat and fun ‘Falling Out of Love Can Be Fun’ (Irving Berlin).

Just beforeCarly started to sing the song ‘Nine’ the musical – a cell phone went off.Carly shouted out – “Hey, turn your phone off. Who do you think you are.”? Hewas embarrassed of course, but we all handled it well.

Loved the touching and hopeful “Long as I Can See The Light(music & lyrics by John Fogerty) from ‘Credence Clearwater Revival’.

Those songs about are just tidbits of all the joys that youwill hear at Carly’s new show. With her – it’s a perfect marriage of music andlyrics. Who needs boyfriends? She’s over that.

Ozard stands out in the crowd of singers. She is not only agreat singer, but has magnetic appeal as she tells stories in between the songs --little tidbits about her travails in life.

The “Set” that she has put together is definitely somethingthat will probably end up in New York.

A WORLD PREMIERE THAT IS CRAZILY INVENTIVE - MAGNETIC

HOLY CRRRAP! ROD GNAPP AND DENISE CORMIER BRING DOWN THE HOUSE!!!

It’s not very often that you come across a script that isthis explosive. Right from the very beginning, as you look at the messy shabbyTrailer Home you feel trapped by some magnetic force.

Rod Gnapp pounces on us right from the beginning. He’s touchirresistible and cantankerous. But there he is – pretty much nude in front ofus, except for a small little Apron to cover the Jewels. When he turns his backon us – we get more revealing peeks.

His ex wife suddenly after many years, is knocking at thedoor. She is appalled by the conditions that he is living in. There is a lovehate magnetism going on here. It’s a dance act of falling out of love, but yet-- there is still something there. They can’t let go. Rod Gnapp tells it all,with his eyes, his body language and his inward glances.

There are moments when you get the feel of “Cat On a Hot TinRoof” as the two lovers who can’t let go manage to irritate and uncover depthsof emotion that they probably should not uncover … at least not to each other.

They thought that they could never put their lives backtogether – and maybe they won’t. Seldom has a script resonate so many good and bad feelings.

Knapp is a rough and tumble guy. Gutsy, funny and charmingat times – but watch out, because he can turn into a sly and slick manipulatorwho is warm and charming one moment and the next -- he is cold blooded and usesthe ‘F’ word more than once. Emma (Denise Cormier) is not exactly an Angel.

She shouts out: -- Emma:-- “You know what you are? Do You?”Ulysses (Rod Gnapp): “ Yeah! I’m a ‘F…. n’ Zen Master!”

Emma: - “You’re…defiantly impoverished! It’s like anything you get. That makes anything better -- You’ve got to ‘Sh-t’ all over it!”

Annapurna is the most electrifying play of the year -- andthe Actors, Denise Cormier and Rod Gnapp who play Emma and Ulysses made SharrWhite's words, light up like firecrackers. I felt the heat.

Rod Gnapp is one of the best Actors in his generation. He’sone of the most important Actors around. You MUST see this remarkable play atthe Magic Theater.

42^nd MOON – “OH KAY!”

Poignant – Hysterical

It all starts out with dazzling pianist (Brandon Ames) atthe keyboard. Most of us are familiar with the musical “Oh Kay” – and it soundsand looks like “Kay” will be back another time. Why? ...Because -- the Gershwinmusical still sparkles after all these decades.

Theresa Byrne (Kay) is a strong presence in this freshenedup musical. Her operatic version of “Someone To Watch Over Me” – gives a newlook to one of the greatest songs ever written.

“Oh Kay” is pretty heavy on the dialogue – but that is theway it was put together in the 20’s. But still – with singers that are simplymarvelous you know why this musical has endured over time. Here is the recipe. Get a great Troupe together that isreally funny and charming. Then put them on the stage ...how could anyone not like it?

Director Maureen McVerry has done a wonderful job in keepingup the pace in this tuneful Gershwin musical. By the way, the sound quality wassuperb in the Theatre. I also got a kick out of watching the magical changes inthe furniture on stage. One minute you are in a mansion and the next you areout on a wonderful patio. Quick changes happen really fast. Remarkable.

“Oh Kay” of course is a love story sung by the captivating actors. The song “Do, Do, Do – is such fun to hear. The popularsong went on to sell plenty of records in the past and still people seek it out.

The Choreographer, Staci Arriaga is a stage wizard thatkeeps those high steps moving. Also loved the exceptional Lighting design byMazz Kurzunski. And the Costumes to die over are by Stephanie Finader. RonGasparinetti is an amazing set designer. He can design my place anytime. Itneeds it.

The Cast is “Firecracker funny” and sometimes hysterical –but they bring “Oh Kay” every actor you ever wanted to see on stage. Here isthe Powerhouse cast: Teressa Byrne, Jackson Davis (really funny), Alanna fox,Kathryn Han, Christina Ingram, Craig Jessup, Erica Kimble, Tyler McKenna,Lisa-Marie Newton, Amie Shapiro, Brian Yates Sharber. Stephen Vaught, ZackThomas Wilde and Skye Wilson.

EMBASSY IS A HOOT AND MORE

IT REMINDS ME OF FAWLTY TOWERS. Very British you know. Ihave no issues with this play at all. ‘Embassy’ is as goofy as a play can get.There is a laugh a minute, or maybe even every second. Lively star studded cast brings the "wrong it's right" characters to life.

One thing I know for sure, is that you will be laughing andsnickering every time someone enters through a different door. The playwrightBrian Thorstenson based this new work, on a Joan Didion quote: “ It’shigh-minded, and second, he didn’t intend for it to be intelligible.” No needfor Brian to worry – it is unintelligible…and that’s why you’ll love it.

Here’s a brief look at this insane plot: An ambassador is onan unnamed island. He’s trying to remodel his embassy. But, he gets distractedas the US Government orders him to redeploy to a war-torn country. There ismore -- and the positively insane man bursts on the scene. He calls himself“The Third Man.”

This is character acting that endlessly fascinates. RichardFrederick plays the Ambassador. He’s delectably amusing. His housekeeper(Olivia Rosaldo) constantly eavesdrops. Her tidbits that she garners will comein handy later. She plays the role with great flair.

The Third Man is also Johnny Rivers’ “Secret Agent Man” --played by Cole Alexander Smith – is simply brilliant - very John Cleese.

This is probably one of the best situational comedies, I’veseen in a long time. Each entrance and exit by the characters is perfectly choreographed.It’s a dance of escalating frustration. And that’s what makes this playabsolutely priceless in every sense of the word. The witty dialogue andhilarious slapstick make this a really great show!

Here are more of the wickedly hilarious players: DanielRedmond (Robaire Dorchester-Scott) and Jan Zvaifler (Mrs. Blundercart round outthis super bowl of comedy.

The new movie “Anonymous” about Shakespeare and the Royalsof England certainly is an ambitious uncovering of whom exactly the writer wasthat really wrote the plays attributed to Shakespeare.

The history of the English Royal Family is outrageousenough, but Emmerich in this movie depicts Shakespeare as a murderous,illiterate simpleton. It has been said and written about, that there never hasbeen any real evidence that Shakespeare ever wrote anything. And that isexactly what I have been saying for many years.

Not everyone believes that Shakespeare wrote the plays thatbecame famous. I’m one of the non-believers. The Chronicle’s Herb Cainresponded to an item in my Column (1980) with this snide remark: “Anothergenius…Lee Hartgrave, wrote in his column:” -- “They should take out just a fewwords in a Mid-Summers Night Dream…and it would be just perfect!” Caen likedthe “Shake.

O.K-- So I’m not a fan of Shakespeare. But, I am a fan ofthe movie “Anonymous”, that exposes who really wrote the famous plays. And itwasn’t the ‘Shake’.

There are a few things wrong with the movie. The flashbacksconfuse the audience. It’s not clear of the times and dates. However, this isone of the most visually luscious and exhilarating summer movies that I’ve seenso far. It’s inventive and definitely takes creativity to unbelievable heightsin this somewhat shocking political struggle for power.

Queen Elizabeth is shown as a much older Queen (flashbacksare shown when she was young). That’s how James of Scotland became King ofEngland. As Elizabeth was in failing health-they more or less told her where toput her hand on the document naming James to succeed her. You know -- just like they do in SanFrancisco’s City Hall.

Some call this movie a work of fiction. I call it --spectacular epic movie making and a triumphant success! And you will gasp at Vanessa Redgraveas Elizabeth the Queen who has many out of wedlock children. She even beddedher own son (Essex) who she later has him beheaded. In the Royal tradition‘Anonymous’ is sumptuous filmmaking.

Every frame of this movie is Grand Scale thrilling , with acast of thousands. There are fun moments also. Watching the Earls and Knightspowder their faces and dangle prissy lace hankies from one of their sleeves istruly fun. Maybe they were all bi-sexual in those days.

How did the plays get into Shakespeare’s hands? Its kind ofstrange – but The Earl of Oxford - Nee: Edward de Vere (Rhy’s Ifans) is thereal author of the plays. Because they are all about the Royals, he wants toremain Anonymous – so he engages a famous writer Ben Johnson (SebastianArnesto) to put the plays on the stage with no authors’ name. Eventually peoplewanted to know who wrote the plays – and they ended up letting Shakespeare usehis name as the Author of the plays. Johnson, who was a very famous Playwright,was just the middleman in this secret deal.

There are a few historical inaccuracies in the play. On theother hand, the recreation of the Globe is sensational along with the mosttalented Actors I have ever seen or heard. If only everyone could act that way,maybe I would begin to like the ‘Shakes’ plays and sonnets.

FILMMAKER Roland Emmerich makes very interesting movies –and “Anonymous” is his most gripping!

EVEN AS A KID GAINESBOURG’S LIFE WAS A ROLLER COASTER RIDE

As a child he was a charmer.

Everyone seemed to befascinated with him and his multiple talents. He had seemed to attract everyonethat that came near him. And as time goes on, he gets more involved in sexualintrigues.

There is something about him in this film that brings upmemories of Humphrey Bogart. There is the dangling cigarette in his mouth --that rarely leaves his mouth, not even while he’s having sex.

He was a talented musician and artist. His friends (whichcame and went) convinced him to change his name from Lucien to SergeGainsbourg. His fame spread, and he became the darling of every party around.If someone dropped an envelope – he would get a group together and celebratethe dropping of that envelope. His smoking was always there. How he managed tobreath is truly an amazement.

Sure, he had the flair for writing music – but you knew thathe was headed for a train wreck. But he didn’t care. His music was all that hecared about. It was always around him – unlike his friends that loved him oneday – and stayed away the next day from his quirkiness. A few remained loyal.He dated and lived with many. Most notable Brigitte Bardot, who eventually sawthat he was getting more and more bizarre as the days went by.

The most interesting thing about this film is the gorgeousfilmmaking and the atmosphere of another time. We watch him fall apart –ruining his own life. But, apparently that is what he wanted – a complex crazylife.

He knew the Parisian clubs very well. He attended themalmost everyday, drinking and smoking. Yes, he had a lot of charisma – but notwhen he became a relentless slob that smelled of booze.

There are sequences that totally capture your attention. Thefilm sequences are episodic. I could have done without the bits ofanimation…but once I got used to his alter ego popping up unexpectedly, I beganto like the life-sized puppet that seemed to always be with Serge.

I think this is a very astounding movie to watch. Thefascination is the dream like look of the entire film. Plus, the actors areterrific. Strong performances from everyone! Visually, this is one of the mostluscious and exhilarating films to watch this year.

DAVID MAMET’S ‘RACE’ – “Kicks Ass!”

RACE

In David Mamet’s play “Race” there is never a dull momentwith non-stop four letter words that will jolt you to the edge of your seat.Yep, it’s such fun to listen to Lawyers verbally slay each other in this hyper,super bowl of drama.

A Multimillionaire has come to a law firm. He is accused ofraping a black woman in a hotel room. He claims that he would never do that –“I really loved her!” – he says. The Lawyers want to take the case and thenthey don’t want to take the case. Finally they agree to take the case.

Then there comes a kink in the whole mix. First of all theMillionaire wants to confess to the Press. The Lawyers think it is an insaneidea, because they have found some loopholes. The most important part beingthat the Black women claims that he ripped her sequined dress off of her andthrew her on the bed. It was found by an outside source that Sequins were notfound in the Hotel room.

The Lawyers seem to have a good case until an employee (whojust finished Law School) is putting the skids on the whole thing. “You sold usout didn’t you Susan?” Yes, Susan (a Black woman) has been working for theother side. She wants to see the Millionaire in jail. And guess what – suddenlyhundreds of sequins were found under the bed at the Hotel. Susan claims she hadnothing to do with it.

There are many twists and turns in this addictive thriller.Mamet has great flair for words, that are deliciously unsettling. He is simplybrilliant. It sure keeps you guessing to the end.

The supercharged Attorneys, go on with their Cat and Mouseinner office game, as they try to trap Susan into confessing that she has “sold themout.” Did she or did she not? That is the question that everyone is wonderingabout.

RONNIE LARSEN’S ‘MAKING PORN’

MAKING PORN reveals secrets that even a wife may not know.In this refreshed version of “Making Porn”, Ronnie Larsen has put together somereally awesome staging. The timing is perfect – the actors are handsome and thefun just never stops.

Prim and proper is not what you could call “Making Porn” –but it does give us a lot of good hi-jinks fun. Just remember – when you’re infront of a camera your hair and clothes must be perfect, on or off.

Set in San Francisco in the early 80’s where young men arelook to make a little money (or big money) in the porno industry. Just look atJack Hawk (Matthew Rush) who is straight and married. He wants to be an actor,but really can’t act his way out of a Cheerio Box. What he can do is flex hismassive muscles. Oh, and below the waist? Well, you know what I’m talking about– it hangs low.

The Director (Ronnie Larsen) is kind of tight with themoney. Some of the men, who have been around for a time know how to negotiatewith him for a better deal. Take the somewhat jaded Porn Star Ray Tanner (IvanHardin). He knows how to swing his tool around. So, he gets a little bit betterpay. After all, he’s a star.

Then there is the new boy, who is barely of legal age. Or atleast looks that way. Ricky (Noah Longton) comes into the movie biz with hisbright eyes wide open. Will this lead to stardom? Who knows – but no doubtmillions will watch the Video in comfort at home as they exercise their bodyparts.

The Porn Movie is called “Cops”. You know -- a Cop arrests you – only because he digs you.It’s the uniform. Whether you are a Plumber or a Cop – a uniform always getswhat he wants.

Jamie (Jared Scott) has been in many plays at NewConservatory, A Larsen Show called “All Male Peep Show” and the Off-Broadwayhit – “Sleeping with Straight Men” (which he also produced.” Scott is one ofthe best actors around – and it’s good to have him back.

Sabrina De Mio (Linda) plays the wife of the buffed up wannabe Actor that turns to Porno movies – cause they need the money. Linda, thewife, tries to keep him in the Porno biz. She becomes his agent and demands andgets a huge bunch of money for his dangling talents. She talks about histalents – especially his 15- foot tall tool. Of course, I exaggerate. But, itis enormous.

There is a lot of badass ass-kicking stuff. Even thefurniture can’t take the brutality. Hey, this is not Yoga. It’s real hockeyplayer stuff. I think you guys will be pleased with the “Super Size Action.”

It kind of ends with a cuddly touch. Here are some wordsfrom a well known song: (not in the play) -- but right for it.) “Tonight thenight of love is in your eyes, but will you love me tomorrow?” And that is atough one to answer. Maybe it should be sung to something a little bit lower.

HERE IS THE NAKED TRUTH. The entire cast IS ripping good.They worked really HARD, and gave award-winning performances. They should beproud of their talents. It’s sexy -- and terrifically twisted, and funny.

THE DIRECTOR RONNIE LARSEN (he plays Arthur (Director) inthe show -- is also a famed Playwright.) He’s amazing.

You should really try to see this “Tongue in cheek play.”It’s at 125A Hyde Street (Near Golden Gate) at, the Custom Made Theatre.

PETER GALLAHGER THRILLS THE VENETIAN ROOM

PETER GALLAGHER BUSHY EYEBROWS AND A MARVELOUS VOICE

ACTOR, SINGER GALLAGHER is a stage and movie actor. Heplayed the part of Danny Zuko in a touring production of Broadway’s Grease andhe was in that great movie “American Beauty”, plus “The Idolmaker”, and “Sex,Lies and Videotape” – and dozens of other productions.

He was quoted as saying – “Everyone seems to mention myeyebrows (They are very bushy.) Gallagher also has plump lips. Nothing attractsgirls like the combination of sexy lips and bushy eyebrows. Lucky him.

Gallagher appeared with Glenn Close in Stoppard’s “The realThing”. He achieved more fame in Steve Soderbergh’s “Sex, Lies, andVideotape" (1989). He was also Sky Masterson in the ’92 Broadway Revivalof Guys and Dolls.

He also released an Album (7 days in Memphis in 2005) on theSony BMG label. It includes the studio recording of “Don’t Give Up On Me”. There also is a video of his single“Still I Long For Your Kiss”.

Gallagher is making his West Coast premiere of his acclaimedcabaret performance of “Songs and Stories”. The talented veteran of stage, screen and film brings outmany songs from the Great American Songbook as well as those wonderful Broadwayshows and experiences in his career. That’s why it titled “SONGS and STORIES.

SHIRELLES AT RRAZZ ROOM - NOT TO BE MISSED

THE SHIRELLES AT THE RRAZZ ROOM – I’M HOOKED!

THE SHIRELLES ARE PROBABLY THE BEST GIRL GROUPS AROUND --their intonation, timing and sweet delivery of the fantastic repertory of thetunes of yesteryear put me on that high speed train we would all like to see.The magnificent tunes rap-around the arrangements. Everyone can hear everyword. That’s right – it puts you in front row center.

Beverly Lee is one of the founders of the group. She hasbeen weaving her musical magic in crisp, sparkling 3-D for 52 years. She goesfrom slow and mellow to upbeats that will make your socks roll up and down. Leeis determined to keep the spirit of the great musical sounds and all thosememories. “We will always have our memories” – Beverly Lee said. “Unlike themusic today that no one will remember what they were doing when they heardit.” I agree. Almost all the newmusic is tripe. There isn’t a story in the music today. All the new stuff isjust one lyric that is sung over and over again. I wouldn’t call it music. It’smore like torture.

“Mama Said” is a high-flying hoot. It starts out with funcute chitchat that gets your blood moving. I loved it – every movement everypause – every snicker is just so incredible – WOW! Now you listen to Mama.

“I Met Him on a Sunday” – We hope to meet on a Sunday – butit turns out to be Dreams of Falling out of love.” – It’s still buzzing aroundin my head. I haven’t forgotten a second of it. See what those Shirelles have done to me.

Then there is the Sassy “Tonight’s the Night.” – alyric…”You say you gonna miss me tonight? – Well, it looks like he’s not gonnaturn up tonight! The tune is first rate in the hands of the Fab Four Shirelles.

There are several more songs in the show that will justsweep you up into the moment. In 1962 they wrote “Soldier Boy”. It’s just as pertinent now as it wasthen. Boys are still coming home from wars. “Soldier Boy” was a huge hit – andmany other groups covered the song. But – The Shirelles version stayed on top.As they sang the song – they asked if there were any Soldiers in the audience.Three men went up on the stage. The Shirelles sang the song and danced withthem. This was such a touching moment that many in the audience were tearingup.

At the beginning of the show the STARS all wore Yellow Gownswith sparkles on it. They all traded being the lead singer. One said: “We’vebeen with Beverly for 22 years. She was an Original of the Group and she hasbeen performing for 52 years.” She still looks and is in great voice and stillhas that terrific body.

Near the end the other two girls took over the stage for anumber, and the audience kept applauding for Beverly Lee to come back out onthe stage. She not only sang the Pop Rock classic “Love Train”, she changedinto a shimmering showgirl sexy dress. Boy – did she ever glitter and kickthose legs up. Yes, she does have great legs. As she said – “I may be senile –but I’m not that senile!” She jokes, of course. I might ad. She can shimmy and shake those memories for meanytime.

TALK ABOUT MISERABLE PEOPLE –Two couples get together. One couple leave the big city (France) to find a new life inthe country. They found a house where is snows pretty much all the time. Eachcouple has a son. One couple’s son (the city folk) adopted a black boy. Thewhite kid likes to make up games. He makes his black buddy act like a slave. That partof the movie is not funny.

However, there are somereally good chuckles in

this movie. The couple that owns both of thehouses hasn’t had sex with each other for a long time. Turns out her husband, is a closet Gay.He try’s to kiss the husband of the other couple. Yes, I know it’s confusing.

The Husband (the straighthunk) in the rental house is more interested in the woman who married the GayMan. His lifestyle is to run around naked in snow up to his knees. The Danishhave so much fun – and don’t mind freezing to death.

The infidelity turns thecouples against each other. The sneaking around days now over – the Rentalcouple moves back to France and the snow bound couple stay in the snow. Onlydifference is that the Gay Man moves to the Rental Unit and his wife and sonlive in the other house.

The Nuanced performances keepyou intrigued. Of course the best thing about the movie is the sexual steam. It just about melts the snow.

HOW TO WRITE A NEW BOOK FOR THE BIBLE

A Son has come home to takecare of his mother who is on the edge of dying. She (Linda Gehringer) is feistyand contrary. The dying Mom hides her medicines from the Son and she sneaksinto the bathroom to smoke cigarettes. Not a good Idea for someone who is dyingfrom Cancer.

Her son and care keeper is acharacter oddly enough named Bill Cain (the Author’s name) – played by Tyler Pierce.This play is about a Mother and Son that have a difficult time getting alongtogether. There are religious issues, fun, bitter sweet memories -- and ghostsof a father that has recently died.

The play slides back andforth from the present to the past. Kind of like, “Xmas Past”.

You see the son is a writer.He is also a Jesuit priest, who is kind and caring – even though the familybasically doesn’t think that writing is anything important. They see it as anon-job.

The play itself spends a longtime judging people, especially (the Son) – but they never seem to have thetime to judge themselves. This is a brilliant creation that Bill Cain has comeup with. It could work on several levels – even as an Opera. It has that kindof Operatic feel to it. The staging is very operatic. You expect them to startsinging a sumptuous Aria.

The older women who is dying,throws out a couple of four letter words. Hey, wouldn’t you also if you were interrible pain? There is no good or evil here. Just a family, that is in deepdespair.

I’ll tell you something. Thisplay will linger in your mind for quite some time. Maybe forever. It’scertainly better than say, TV’s “Dancing with the Stars.”

You will be crying withlaughter at times. And if you are not affected by the ending – well, then youare just not human. It surely will remain in your memory for a long time.

THE TRULY AMAZING STELLARPERFORMERS ARE: Aaron Blakely, Linda Gehringer, Leo Marks and Tyler Pierce.

The Scenic Design by ScottBradley is a miracle. Callie Floor’s Costume Design embraces a whole newatmosphere. The miraculous lighting design has created a fantastic visualimagination.

NYMPH ERRANT - GLITTERING ENSEMBLE

NYMPH ERRANT

For a 1933 musical -- NymphErrant took some daring turns that probably shocked some of the upper lipEnglish. Act one takes place in Oxford, England. The local Reverend Pither,debates whether it is proper for an English lady (Evangeline) to travel alone-- especially a young, attractive and virginal young woman.

Now the musical romps alongto Lausanne, Switzerland, where Evangeline joins her friends. Her friends talkopenly about love and sex. Evangeline is intent on exploring what sex is allabout. And if anyone can probe the sexual world it would be the inquisitiveEvangeline. Her Chemistry teacher encourages “earthy pursuits”. That’s all thatEvangeline needed to know. She meets Andre De Croissant, a French theatricalProducer, who wants to take her to France and make her a star in a ‘follies’type show.

More frolicking takes placein France, Italy, Greece, Turkey and the Arabian Desert. However, hard as shetries – she never seems to hook up with a sexual partner. Even a Maharani doesn’tseem to show much interest in her.

Originally there was a Nudityscene in the musical – but that was cut. However the song “Sweet Nudity” isstill in the score. Many other titillating songs remain in the show.

42^nd Moon worksits magic again. This is a big production with a perfect cast. The show isirresistible from its first minutes. And you know what – the Actors can singand dance ever so smoothly. The whole ensemble clicks.

The show is a little long.After all – it takes time to visit the whole world. But the trip is worth it.

Scrumptious music (by ColePorter) keeps you amused. Musical Director Dave Dobrusky not only plays thepiano marvelously, he is also a part of the show. Nick Di Scala is part of theband – A great big part. Really enjoyed it.

FEAR OVER FRISCO – TENSE AND BROODING - GREAT FUN

Well to get started, there was a tall good-looking guystanding in the Lobby Entrance of the Hypnodrome Theatre. I arrived early, buthe said that I would have to wait outside. The PR guy came by and brought meback into the Lobby and introduced me to the tall good-looking man. We bothremembered that we already knew each other. He was the famous “Czar of Noir” –Eddie Muller. The PR guy brought me a folding chair to wait for the Theatre toopen. In the meantime – Muller introduced me as a famous writer. Was this atrick? Are they planning to put me on the scary stage? After all it is Noirmixed up with deviant and sadistic scenes.

Eddie Muller has written three spell-binding Noir plays“The Grand Inquisitor”, “Obvious Explanation” and The third play (The Drug) isdirected by the over the top Russell Blackwood. But we love “Over the Top”screaming. Especially when they put someone’s eyes out.

“Drug” tookplace originally in Saigon. Muller rewrote the kinky play to play in SanFrancisco. The Czar has made it even kinkier than anyone could imagine. I thinkyou might want to cover your eyes in some scenes. This is bizarre. You canexpect screams that will freeze up your spine.

Sure it’s Graphic stuff. But it’s made to shock theaudience. You will love the surprise ending where the lights go out completelyfor a time. There you are in a real blackout. Scary? Yes! Then in the dark,strange things happen to the audience in “The Spook Show”. Wow! It’s nerveracking. Glad I still had some popcorn to chew on.

AS USUAL THE CAST WAS EXTRAORDINARY!

STEVE MARTIN’S HILARIOUS ADAPTATION OF 1910 PLAY IS MERCILESSLY COMIC

THE UNDERPANTS

It’s 1913 and a Lady justdoesn’t let her underpants slip onto her shoes while she waves at the King. Itwas the scandal of the day. There they were…her underpants were resting on herAnkles. Her prudish husband (a government clerk) is worried that this impropermishap will ruin his career. And this couldn’t have happened at a worst timefor him. You see -- he is trying to rent out a spare room. But his wife Louisenow will have a chance to drop her underpants more often because all theTenants that want to rent are males.

Louise’s underpants becamecelebrity in their own right. The male boarders were lined up trying to rentthe spare room. Not so much for the tiny room – but they think that if she letsher underpants slip down, maybe she might be interested in something more.

The play is witty -- itsdouble entendre wording is just a hoot. This cast -- gives the words asalacious boost that keeps the laughs coming and coming.

Louise is bored with herstiff husband. And no – that is not a double entendre. But her home life is nota (‘Bowl of Cherries’).

Most of the interaction withthe Tenants and her husband take place in the Kitchen – where lots of flirtinggoes on. It’s such juicy fun to watch.

THE CAST COULDN’T BE MOREFUN! THEY ARE: Riley Krull, DavidVega, AJ Davenport, Paul Stout, Gabriel A. Ross and Michael Moerman. They areall crazily entertaining.

HAL GELB, the Director did areally swell job. And the Costume design by Scarlett Kellum kept the rest ofthe cast from dropping their underpants. Hector Zavala created the interestingScenic Design.

· Carl Sternheim wrote theoriginal play. Steve Martin adapted it.

A.C.T'S 'ONCE IN A LIFETIME' - BRILLIANT!

ONCE IN A LIFETIME BRINGS AMAZING HOLLYWOOD FLAVOR TOA.C.T.

A.C.T’S production of ‘Oncein a Lifetime’ is dazzling. The show is like getting on a Hollywood treadmillthat won’t let you get off. Wonderful dialogue sparkles among the brilliantsets and sensational acting. Oh, if only I could have been there in those days.

A.C.T has spared nothing tobring back 1920’s – 30’s Hollywood when Gossip Columnists ruled the day. Forinstance, there is the hilarious take on Gossip’s like Louella Parsons and HeddaHopper. And no one could do it better than Rene Augesen as she plays Gossip Monger Helen Hobart. Shereally nailed the role. Brilliant!

This is majestic staging.It’s pure Hollywood magic. Visually, there has been nothing better on the stagethis year. The razor sharp actors really keep us laughing. No fear of fallingasleep during “Lifetime.” This historical play by Moss Hart and George S.Kaufman is pure genius.

The wow performances in theshow open fast and never slows down – and there is even a wonderful comfy trainthat goes by. Sure would like to be on that train.

There is so much to getexcited about in this farce about romance and comedy – to eye popping exoticArt Deco scenery. And best of all, are the Actors that bring tons of wit andenergy to the stage. Do you get the feeling that I love the show?

Director Mark Rucker has sentus to Hollywood in this engaging, glamorous play.

Also on the stage arewonderful old Movie Clips that were made just as ‘Talkies’ came about. Thosewere the days of Al Jolson -- one of the first to be in a Talkie Movie.

This is THE stage play of theyear. Believe me – it’s as ‘Good as it gets!’ No wonder it’s called “Once in aLifetime!”

Briefly the story: Silentfilms were on their way out. The ‘Talkies’ took over in the 30’s. A Trio ofVaudeville Actors sell their act for just $500 bucks, and they take a Train toHollywood with Ideas of opening a school for voice training. Period Film clipsare incorporated on a big screen to show us what the Hollywood product lookedlike in those days. And it was lots of fun.

Historical fact: Jack Oakiewas the star in the movie (1932). It was long considered a lost movie, but wasrediscovered a few years back and appeared on KQED. It would be great to see itagain.

SHO HO STARRING SARAH MOORE

A CAPRICIOUS DELIGHT!

How many characters does ittake to put on a show? Sarah Moorehas more characters than a bunch of Bunny Rabbits.

Moore’s alter ego, RhondaHammerstein (she claims to be related to the famous Hammerstein’s) is trying tomake it in showbiz. She may not make it to the big Broadway stage – but theaudience is just delighted. The pleasure comes in the madness.

Moore sings songs withoutrageous lyrics like “Everyone Fun is Dead.” Moore’s character Rhonda istrying to make it big time on the stage. It doesn’t work for her. Rhonda thendecides to join the Circus, where she blends with all the other kinky people.

Her friends are very strange.There is “Girlie Man” (and you can guess what he has in mind). And oh yes, ShoGirl meets some that are in even more strange. One character even exposes herbreasts. Oh! Shame!

I really wasn’t expecting toenjoy the show this much. Boy, was I glad that I went to see Moore’s crazybunch of friends. She’s bewitching, inquisitive and she completely astonishes.

You will marvel at her OperaSinging (It’s a complete show in itself. This is stunning artistry thatdeserves the raves that it gets.

Sexual innuendoes arescattered throughout Sarah’s Cast of Thousands. Yep, she’s a crowd-pleaser! Theaudience actually leaped out of their seats to applaud.

LOVE CONQUERS ALL IN TURANDOT

It is Puccini’s last opera.This production (Turandot) at the San Francisco Opera House is the most vivid and colorfulproduction that I have ever seen. For that I can forgive the first two actsthat were a little bit slow. But the ThirdAct is beyond fantastic.

David Hockney has come upwith a production that is way into the future. With dazzling 3-D like visuals.Hockney made sure that the lighting enhanced the music. The result? Electrifying!

In her San Francisco debut Irene Theorin (Turandot) is a princess who is cold as ice. Finally, in the second act theman-hating Turandot begins to melt a little as Prince Calaf manages to answerher riddles. Calaf (Marco Berti) wins over the Princess. Not easily, but hemelts the frigid Princess little by little. The Princess is gorgeously dressedand completely on pitch. She eventually warms up to Calaf who sings the tunefuland beautiful aria “Nussum Dorma.” It’s always the highlight of the Opera.

On stage briefly is Liu (LeahCrocetto) who is in love with Calaf. He, of course likes here, but he doesn’tlove her. Her fate? The Princess sends Liu to her death. The selfish,self-loved Turandot is not all that caring.

I don’t think there could bea better production of “Turandot.” The singing is absolutely breathtaking.

The conductor NicolaLuisotti’s conducting brings a magical blend of Orchestra and Vocals. This Grand Opera opens new light andnew visions of powerful high notes. Every movement is sumptuous.

LOVE CRIME -- POWERFUL, COMPELLING

Love Crime is a very low keycrime story with great acting.

Every nuance makes you not trust anyone in anycorporate office. There is enough tension to keep you squirming in the officechair. Sometimes we think we know who the plotter is and who will be thevictim, and at other times you’re not so sure. Like an Alfred Hitchcock movie –this story is executed like a fine tuned piano.

This film is about dying andgreed. Oddly enough, the French director Corneau Alain died a week after thepremiere of his last movie.

The pace is a little slow attimes but you would expect that in a movie that hangs on to dark secrets. Thereis no doubt about it – Love Crime is a high-class thriller, starring ChristineScott Thomas.

MOZART'S SISTER - THRILLING MUSIC

Here’s the deal. Mozart had a sister who was also a verygood musician. In those days a woman was not allowed to play the violin, soMozart’s sister did it on the sneak. She wanted to attend a Master’s Class inmusic, but her father put thumbs down on that.

The movie is filled withthrilling music and great views of gilded palaces. The future King (Dauphin)struts around the palace in his wig and painted face. He is probably Gay – butinvites Mozart’s sister to his Den of Inequity where he shuts the door with hissoon to be wife. But to throw off everyone on guard, he has Mozart’s sisterdress as a young man. Of course, he is Gay and doesn’t get it. So when heinvites Ms Mozart to his man cave he demands that she leave the boys clotheson. He tells his soon to be Queen to leave the room – apparently to have sex.Then he flings the door open and calls her a pervert and a deviate. “Get out ofhere he yells – and take your music with you. It’s trash.” Well – what did youexpect in the 18^th Century?

One great thing about thisfilm is that the directory did not make the actors over act. Later Ms Mozartmoved away from her parents. She eventually married a man with five childrenand she became a Countess. She died broke and exhausted. She had no money.

Marie Feret plays the role ofMs Mozart. When she sings – you’ll think that you just went to heaven. Well, Iknow one thing – if nothing else, she can always get a job singing. She has afantastic range.

This movie is very well done.Not quite as good as Amadeus – but it does you remarkable insights to the1800’s. Oh, it’s not for Baby Boomers. They would not like or understand it.Ninety percent of them don’t know who Mozart is.

YES, IT’S SO DELICATE THAT YOU HARDLY NOTICE IT

Albee was once honored as “America’s greatest playwright.” Really? You could have fooled me. Most of his plays didn’t do very well on the stage, except for one – and that would be “Virginia Woolf.” Personally, I think they should take that award back. A great playwright was Tennessee Williams – not Albee.

The first act sort of sets up the story. As usual (like Virginia Woolf) there is the incessant drinking and arguing. A love between a couple becomes very boring very fast. The boring couple gets kicked out of the friend’s house because something (will never know what) frightens them. The only thing really made clear in the nut cakes home, is the couple moved back home. I wish I could have stood up and cheered. Hey, one night would have been enough for me. And come to think of it…one Act is plenty out of the three-Act Play.

I love the Aurora Theatre – especially the intimacy of it. But with even the outstanding actors in this play – they must have a compelling script to make us love Albee. It’s pseudo psychobabble. Some news outlets are refusing to review plays, unless it is new material. The Actors in Albee’s bore did what they could. I marveled at the strength that they brought forth.

However – this will be the last time I will be tempted to see another Albee Play. I had hoped the Aurora would have revised the show (if Albee would permit) to give it more steam.

DOES HENRY THE VI HAVE A DEATH WISH?

It would seem that way in Henry The Sixth Part Two. Henryhas married the daughter (Margaret) of King Charles of France. But as we knowthis is a marriage of convenience. The palace is full of intrigue. Henry’sroyal relatives are plotting and scheming to get rid of young Henry, so thatthey can take over the monarchy. However, Henry believes that everyone loveshim and that they would not do him any harm.

Some of Henry’s true loyalfriends are imprisoned by Henry’s relatives. The plotters imprison anyone thatagrees with Henry and they sadistically murder those that try to protect Henry.Henry may be next. Even Queen Margaret is even in on the plot to kill Henry.

Henry has to make concessionsto his relatives to keep from getting his head cut off. He doesn’t know whom totrust. That’s the funny thing about Henry. He thinks everyone in the end willlove him. Well – they don’t. He takes a back seat to the Throne. Henry finallyrealizes that he might be the next target. Merrily, the relatives are very busykilling each other that they seem to have overlooked Henry – at least for thetime being.

The Actors at the Box CarStudios on Hyde Street are enormously talented. Better acting would be verydifficult to find. Shakespeare’s gripping story is a difficult mess. It’s hardto figure out who is who – and who did what to whom. Henry, of course is verytrusting. Here is what Henry says about his plotting Uncle (the Protector) –“The Duke is virtuous, mild, and too well given to dream on evil, or to work mydownfall.” Well, so much for trusting your relatives – the Duke (Uncle) plotsto dethrone Henry.

The Sets and lightingcertainly made for a scary look, and the sound effects are thrilling.

THE SPLENDID ACTORS ARE:Vallarta Lichen – Ian Hops – Jeremy Forbing – April Fritz – Casey Worthington –Caleb Carbrera – Ben Landmesser – Andrew Akraboff – Allison Combs – Will Hand –and Samuel Richie. You don’t find this much talent on a small stage anywhere.Intellect and emotion coexist in this mesmerizing production.

STUFFED AND UNSTRUNG PUPPETS GO WILD IN SAN FRANCISCO

STUFFED AND UNSTRUNG

JUST LIKE A RAIDERS GAME – TOILET HUMOR RUNS WITH THE BALL OR IS BALLS?

On the stage sits over 50 puppets or so waiting for the actors on the stage to put their fists up their rear to manipulate the adorable puppets (that’s why the show is called “Stuffed’.” You’ll get used to the double entendre comments. All adult stuff!

This show may look like it’s geared towards toddlers – but you would be wrong. “Stuffed and Unstrung” is definitely for Adults. The show began in New York off-Broadway, under the name of “Up!-Uncensored.” But, now they production has taken their hands on tour.

There are lots of funny moments in the show – and then there are some moments that you wish they would leave out. I didn’t really care much for the audience participation part. It may or may not have been pre-arranged – but it sure felt that way to me.

Technically, this puppet show is a miracle. There is so much going, on that it creates a dizzy atmosphere. There are cameras, the puppets, a band and the real actors. The actors the stars, but the puppets get all the credit. Without them – the puppets would be just limp stuffing.

The puppets are small. Luckily we get to see them in HD on huge screens on each side of the Theater – and they are cute. Not cute enough to sleep with, but could be cuddly.

REDUCTION IN FORCE - SLICK AND SUREFIRE THRILLER

Ripped right off the Headlines is the new play “Reduction in Force” – written by Ace Playwright Patricia Milton. Milton’s words fantastically drip with Tension and suspense. This play is all about corporate structure and how they scheme to get rid of the “Little People”. WARNING: BIG BUSINESS MAY BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH.

Gabby (Kendra Lee Oberhauser) is a scheming, obnoxious High up manager in the company. Anything she doesn’t like gets shredded – even if it clearly says on the document “Do not shred.” Let’s just say – “Gabby” is not very generous. But it is delicious to watch her squirm and manipulate to keep her throne.

Gabby has a new “hire” in mind - a sexy, good-looking man (John Patrick Moore) who also knows how to manipulate. Gabby wants to get rid of her longtime Executive secretary (Jan Zvaifler). Sparks fly across the room. Gabby pretends that she is having a hard time about which one should be fired. She can’t keep them all. So, is it Sex or the best “Executive?”

I’ve never been so engrossed in a play. It definitely is an Edge of the Seat evening. This is acting heaven. Not only is the sly humor sensational – this is a riveting and mesmerizing play that is everything that companies have become. “Trample the older employees – and pay new hires, less.” All the banks and Computer makers do it - (send everything to China) and fire more USA workers.

This is satire of the highest level. Believe me – Gary Graves has directed with great flair, as he takes this Cat and Mouse satire to new heights. It’s diabolical and fun. The ending will throw you for a loop.

By the way – the Berkeley City Club at 2315 Durant is Gorgeous.

PEACHES EN REGALIA. SOON TO BE A GLOBAL HIT

IT’S JUST PEACHY!

A NEW PLAY IS AT STAGEWERX CALLED “PEACHES en REGALIA”

It starts out in a charming diner. Then, all of a sudden someone eats a treat called “Peaches en Regalia.” Then, it accelerates from there.

We first meet Peaches (Sarah Moser) who works at Dougs Diner. She is one of those ditzy blondes that solidify everything that can go wrong in a diner.

And the patrons of the diner? Well, they are very interesting. There is Norman (Philip Coleman). He is nerdy, and seems to be afraid of everything. Later however, he falls for “Peaches” special dish – “Peaches en Regalia."Actually, everyone falls for that “Dish” – it must have Viagra in it.

And then comes along Syd (Cooper Carlson). He’s slick as oil and handsome too boot. Carlson has that charming smarmy, seductive smile. He’s the kind of guy that is able to keep everything in proper order. Joanne (Nicole Hammersia) completes this madcap evening of mishaps. Like the rest of the players – she is a comic masterpiece.

The whole play in two acts is very clever and vibrant with infectious spunky charm. You know what – it’s a warm and fuzzy refreshing adventure. For me - it’s the funniest play this season! Must see acting!

This documentary is a rare look at the inner workings of the New York Times. Not unlike all Newspapers and all Media (Radio and T.V.) – the staff the NYT all have meetings to discuss the daily goings on. It could be called a Bitch fest.

Much of the talk in these “Page One” meetings is all about how the Internet has taken away a lot the advertising revenue. That may be true, but on the other hand – maybe if the Newspapers didn’t charge the outrageous costs for the small ads, they might still be making a bunch of dough. Remember all the Classifieds?

There is still nothing like a Newspaper. I love to hold them in my hand as I drink the morning coffee. There has been a huge shake up in the media. Newspapers have been going into bankruptcy like dominos falling over. The movie even points out how Chicago’s giant paper, the Tribune, had to make tremendous cuts in staff just to keep the Newspaper around. Are they too big to fail? – not really – but the people that have been buying up the Media are really not interested in that. They are only interested in bleeding all the money out of the newspapers that they can get. Who cares about Journalism? The rich owners don’t.

David Carr, a fascinating writer, works at the Times. He is a brassy, no holds barred kind of guy. He tells you like it is in this Docudrama. Of course, as far as I’m concerned the meetings at Newspapers and Radio outlets are ridiculous, at most. I kind of get the idea, that Carr would also think so. It’s a “Pick” at someone during the meetings, to show that you are smarter than the others are. Staff meetings are really meant to humiliate. And in this Documentary the New York Times should win the Nit Picking award of the year.

The Times is still strong and probably will be for a long time. How they manage to keep going with a small-scale staff is a wonder in itself. Yes, Internet is fun, easy and fast – but the Internet generally does not have foreign journalists that are willing to put their lives on the line. The “Times” does. As interesting as “Page One” is – it does get a little repetitious. So keep that in mind. The grumbling never stops.

David Carr, who you may have seen recently on the Bill Maher show on HBO, is a crusty journalist who says what he wants and when he wants to. He basically is the star of this documentary. Carr is as talented and controversial as the “Times”. Also in the cast are these stellar performers: Bruce Headlam – Brian Stelter –Richard Perez – Pena - Bill Keller and Tim Arango. All give rich and riveting performances in this capricious delight.
